POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position Title:

Director of Student Development

FLSA Status:  Exempt

Reports to:

Vice President of Student and Enrollment Services

Department:

Student Development (Student and Enrollment Services)

Date Prepared:

June 2005

BASIC FUNCTION

The Student Development Center is a multipurpose, multidimensional department within the Division of Student and Enrollment Services that addresses personal, academic, intellectual, physical, career, recreational, cultural, and social growth and development in students.  The goal of this department is to promote the success (academic, personal, and career) of current and prospective students, alumni, employers, faculty, and staff.  The Director of Student Development is responsible for all eight units that comprise the Student Development Center.

NATURE & SCOPE

The Director of Student Development reports to the Vice President of Student and Enrollment Services.  The Director is afforded latitude to make all decisions pertaining to the administration of the Student Development Center; however, in order to maintain a “check-and-balance” approach, the Director consults with other key personnel about decisions that impact the College.

While this position fills a variety of functions, perhaps the most important is providing leadership and expertise in the planning and execution of programs to help students develop psychological, social, and academic skills necessary for success in college and in life.  This includes hosting workshops, providing speakers, and assisting with individual advice and critique.  In order to fulfill this duty successfully, the Director must have a creative mind in order to develop new, interesting, stimulating programs.  In addition, the incumbent must have the ability to translate these innovative ideas into real, working programs.

Another major component of this position involves personal and career counseling.  The Director must have significant counseling experience in order to aid students who are in need of his/her services.  This can include crisis intervention, emotional counseling, or career advice.  This can be one of the more challenging, yet rewarding, portions of this position.

In addition, the Student Development Center serves as the coordination point for many campus-wide projects.  One of these projects is New Student Orientation, an event that is critical to new student and family perception of ABAC.  Much planning and attention must be devoted to this event.  Other events which demand equal attention include standardized testing.  Test proctors must be trained properly, facilities must be reserved, tests must be promoted, and students must be contacted in regards to these tests.  It is the job of the incumbent to see that tests are administered correctly.  Because of all the varied projects for which he/she is the supervisor, the Director must be an exceptional organizer.  Prioritization in balancing these and other duties is also important.

Furthermore, the incumbent is charged with the task of supervising job placement at ABAC.  This is an important area of student service.  Not only is successful job placement critical to the success of ABAC graduates, it also has a large impact on the perception of the College from the viewpoint of outside employers.
