BASIC FUNCTION

 

 The Coordinator of Residence Life is essential for the supervision and development of the residents at ABAC Place.  Through overseeing the residents at ABAC Place, the position is responsible for supervising Community Assistants, enforcing policies and procedures, handling any roommate or personal conflicts, maintaining regular hours in the Housing Office, and managing any other issues that arise.

 

 

NATURE & SCOPE

 

The Coordinator of Residence Life reports to the Dean of Student Life and Housing.  The incumbent understands the goal of the department and position, but he/she has the latitude to determine how best to accomplish this goal.  While the incumbent may consider developing new procedures when necessary, these decisions are typically approved by the supervisor.  Approximately 16 Community Assistants report to the Coordinator of Residence Life.

 

The task of supervising ABAC Place can be a large one.  Thus, it is necessary that the staff function as a team.  The Coordinator of Residence Life serves as the team leader for the Community Assistants.  He/She provides direction, leads meetings, and aids the Community Assistants in reaching the goals of the department.  The incumbent also serves as a team member within the Department of Student Life and Housing.  He/She assists the Dean whenever necessary in order to further the department.

 

This position requires that the incumbent be a superior problem solver.  Issues frequently arise concerning student discipline, and the incumbent must decide upon fair action to take.  Furthermore, problems involving facilities, roommates, or other students often occur, and the incumbent has the responsibility of resolving these conflicts.

 

In addition, superb communication skills are necessary.  These interpersonal skills help the incumbent in dealing with problems.  They also allow him/her to be an effective motivational force for the Community Assistants.  Moreover, these skills permit the incumbent to have a better understanding of the issues and attitudes of students in ABAC Place, and this understanding leads to better job performance and more satisfactory living for students.  The incumbent must also be able to communicate with a diverse group of students.

 

The incumbent must be able to function in a constantly changing environment.  Priorities frequently change, and unexpected issues surface.  The incumbent must be able to recognize when attention needs to be shifted to a particular area and then take appropriate action.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

 

Ø       Selects, trains, and supervises Community Assistants

 

Ø       Determines the appropriate disciplinary actions and sanctions for residents and students violating ABAC policies

 

Ø       Works collaboratively with privatized management to resolve facility issues at ABAC Place

 

Ø       Assists the Dean of Student Life and Housing and maintains a positive working relationship with the Student Development Services Department

 

Ø       Works evening and weekend shifts as needed for call

 

Ø       Serves as advisor for the Resident Housing Association

 

Ø       Completes various other tasks as necessary

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

BUDGETARY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

The Coordinator of Residence Life oversees the programming portion of the General Housing budget.  The incumbent also makes purchases for the office.  The incumbent issues fines for violations totaling approximately $10,000 per semester.

 

 

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

This position requires a four-year college degree and one to three years of experience in the field.  Professional training in conflict mediation and crisis and emergency response is also required.
