Position Title:

Coordinator of the Academic Assistance Center

FLSA Status:  Exempt

Reports to:

Director of Learning Support

Department:

Academic Assitance Center (Student and Enrollment Services

Date Prepared:

June 2005

BASIC FUNCTION

The Academic Assistance Center provides tutoring services for students at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, and the Coordinator is responsible for managing the Center’s daily activities and providing direction.  The principal function of the Center and the position is to supplement academics with programs, workshops, and resources to enhance student academic success.

NATURE & SCOPE

The Coordinator of the Academic Assistance Center reports to the Director of Learning Support, although all work is self-assigned.  While general objectives for the unit are in place, the incumbent has the responsibility of establishing the plan, determining the priorities, and stipulating the processes for accomplishing these objectives.  If new procedures are needed, the incumbent has the autonomy to establish them (consistent with general College policies).  The incumbent supervises 35 to 40 tutors in the Academic Assistance Center.

This position oversees all of the tutoring and services of the Academic Assistance Center.  This includes identifying, recruiting, training, and scheduling tutors.  In order to identify tutors, the Coordinator contacts various campus departments for recommendations.  Scheduling tutors takes considerable attention to detail.  The incumbent must identify peak hours when tutors are most needed in order to ensure that they are available to students.  In addition, the incumbent must monitor the number of hours worked and compare this to that allowed by the budget.  This is imperative, as the tutoring services must span an entire year without overstepping the budget.

Promotion of the services of the Academic Assistance Center is another large responsibility of this position.  In order for students to make use of the Center, they must know about it.  The Coordinator uses creativity to devise strategies and prepare materials for publicizing the Center.

Creativity is also used extensively in developing and planning Student Success Workshops.  Over the course of the year, there are approximately 15 to 20 of these workshops, and the Coordinator must create ideas to provide stimulating materials and topics.  These workshops must meet an observed need and be promoted effectively in order to be successful.
