BASIC
FUNCTION |
|
The Chief Information Officer works toward
ensuring that the campus utilizes the most efficient technology-based
solutions to problems. The incumbent
provides direction for the Office of Information Technology and Services,
which strives to make ABAC a leader in innovative technology solutions. |

NATURE
& SCOPE |
|
The Chief Information
Officer reports to the President of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural
College. However, the majority of work
is self-assigned based on campus projects, University System of Georgia
directives, and knowledge of job responsibilities. This position has the freedom to consider
courses of action within general College policies, principles, and
goals. The incumbent has the latitude to
consider what activities must be undertaken within the Office of Information
Technology and Services in order to achieve the goals of the College. The incumbent supervises
approximately ten employees. The field of information
technology is an ever-changing one.
New products and systems are introduced, only to be replaced months
later. The Office of Information
Technology and Services at ABAC is no different. The Chief Information Officer must
constantly learn new things about the field in order to ensure that ABAC is
operating at the most technologically efficient level. Furthermore, he/she must make certain that
the staff of the department keeps current in issues and technology in the
industry as well. They will use this
knowledge in implementing new policies and in servicing existing systems. The Chief Information
Officer is in charge of maintaining the technical security and viability of
institutional databases related to student, financial, and administrative
systems. This requires a large degree
of long-term vision and planning, as well as the ability to execute in the
short-term. This is another situation
in which current knowledge of the industry is helpful and necessary. It is important that this
position be filled by a capable leader.
In order to be successful, more than only the aforementioned skills
are necessary. The incumbent must be
able to adapt easily to changing processes.
The incumbent must also have superior communication skills, which aid
in assisting customers as well as in articulating needs and views while
participating in committee and forum meetings. |

BUDGETARY
RESPONSIBILITIES |

The Chief Information
Officer is responsible for the budget of the Office of Information Technology
and Services, approximately $860,000, and the Student Technology Fee budget,
approximately $200,000. |

SPECIALIZED
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED |

This position requires an
advanced degree and three to five years of experience in the field. |
