Reports to:

President

Department:

Division of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation and Athletics

Date Prepared:

June 2005

BASIC FUNCTION

The Athletics Director is the administrator charged with supervising the College’s athletic program.  The incumbent ensures that the athletic program follows all National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and Region XVII rules and regulations.  He/She is also expected to coordinate the athletic program in the best interest of the College.

NATURE & SCOPE

The Athletics Director reports to the President of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.  Work is assigned from a variety of sources, including the President, the NJCAA National Office, The Region XVII office, team coaches, and the HPER Division Chair.  Most decisions regarding the athletic program can be made by the incumbent without consultation with superiors.  This position has the latitude to consider courses of action within well defined College practices and policies.  The Athletics Director knows what objective is expected of his/her position, but he/she determines how to accomplish this objective and may consider whether new procedures have to be developed to do this.  The incumbent supervises approximately six other employees, along with numerous students and athletes.

This position is multi-faceted.  Time is split between three job titles, and adequate attention must be given to each.  The Athletics Director must have skill in prioritization in order to succeed.  He/She must also be able to change focus easily from one objective to another without compromising the quality of work performed.

The Athletics Director must be a superb communicator and leader.  This ability to communicate is invaluable to the incumbent in motivating students and athletes to achieve their highest level of potential.  A main goal of the College in general is helping students and athletes to excel, and the leadership, integrity, and motivational ability of the Athletics Director is critical to this mission.  These characteristics are also instrumental to the success of the incumbent as a recruiter of student athletes.

Communication ability also plays a large role in the Athletics Director’s role as primary fundraiser for the athletics program and tennis team.  The incumbent must be able to sell the merits of the program and convince donors that it is a worthwhile investment.  If the incumbent can relate to these donors, who come from a variety of backgrounds, there is a much better chance that a donation will be secured.
