BASIC FUNCTION |
|
The Assistant
Director of Public Safety is responsible for filling all shifts, ensuring
calls for service receive a response in a timely fashion, and maintaining the
training standards for all public safety officers. The incumbent also supervises and manages
all employees in the absences of the Director of Public Safety. |
|
NATURE
& SCOPE |
|
The Assistant Director of
Public Safety reports to the Director of Public Safety. The job has the
latitude to consider courses of action within broad College policies and
short-term objectives. The incumbent
has the latitude to determine that new College procedures are needed. Although general unit objectives are in
place, he/she must establish the plan, determine the priorities, and
prescribe the process for achieving objectives. The incumbent supervises approximately 13
employees, the majority of whom are public safety officers. A primary responsibility of
the Assistant Director of Public Safety is scheduling shifts for the Public
Safety Officers. This requires a great
deal of organization. The incumbent
must adequately staff shifts for each day of the year and make sure that
enough officers are on hand to deal with problems that arise. In addition, the incumbent
is responsible for training officers on a regular basis. This requires that the Assistant Director
of Public Safety be a Peace Officer Standards and Training certified
instructor. He/She must also posses
the skill set that makes successful teachers, including patience,
communication ability, motivational skill, and adaptability. These skills are critical to the successful
training of officers, and ultimately to the safety of the campus community. In addition, the Assistant
Director of Public Safety must be assertive yet professional. This will aid in dealing with emotional
constituents and defusing situations that may potentially escalate. A keen grasp of state and local law is also
necessary in these situations. |

Police Department equipment, including weapons, vehicles, radios, and

Mediates
disputes between members of the campus community when necessary |

Public Safety is not responsible for any budget decisions. |

SPECIALIZED
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED |
|
This position requires two
years of college or vocational school and five to seven years of experience
in the field. In addition, the
incumbent must be a Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training certified
instructor. The incumbent must also
be trained to maintain and repair department weapons. |
