BASIC FUNCTION

 

 This is a twelve-month salaried position which reports directly to the Dean of Student Life and Housing.  The Assistant Director will be responsible for day-to-day operations and management for an 831-bed apartment-style living community and a 489-bed suite-style freshman community.

 

 

 

NATURE & SCOPE

 

The Assistant Director of Student Housing reports to the Dean of Student Life and Housing.  The incumbent understands the goal of the department and position, but he/she has the latitude to determine how best to accomplish this goal.  While the incumbent may consider developing new procedures when necessary, these decisions are typically approved by the supervisor.

 

The task of supervising ABAC Place and ABAC Lakeside can be a large one.  Thus, it is necessary that the staff function as a team.  The Assistant Director of Student Housing serves as the team leader for the Resident Life Coordinators.  He/She provides direction, leads meetings, and aids the staff in reaching the goals of the department.  The incumbent also serves as a team member within the Department of Student Life and Housing.  He/She assist the Dean whenever necessary in order to further meet the needs of the department.

 

This position requires that the incumbent be a superior problem solver.  Issues frequently arise concerning student discipline, and the incumbent must decide upon fair action to take.  Furthermore, problems involving facilities often occur, and the incumbent has the responsibility of resolving these conflicts.

 

In addition, superb communication skills are necessary.  These interpersonal skills help the incumbent in dealing with problems.  They also allow him/her to be an effective motivational force for the Resident Coordinators and Community Assistants.  Moreover, these skills permit the incumbent to have a better understanding of the issues and attitudes of students in ABAC Place and ABAC Lakeside, and this understanding leads to better job performance and more satisfactory living for students.  The incumbent must also be able to communicate with a diverse group of students.

 

The incumbent must be able to function in a constantly changing environment.  Priorities frequently change, and unexpected issues surface.  The incumbent must be able to recognize when attention needs to be shifted to a particular area and then take appropriate action.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

 

Ø  Provide oversight of various departmental budgets and plan long term budgetary needs for Campus Housing

 

Ø  Provide direction and oversight for the Maintenance Supervisor and his staff

 

Ø  Assist the Dean in selection, training, development, and supervision of Housing Staff and in other administrative duties as assigned

 

Ø  Assist with the opening and closing of residence halls and summer turn around

 

Ø  Participate in on-call rotation and serve on the Campus Emergency Response Team

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

BUDGETARY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Assistant Director of Student Housing will be responsible for building and maintaining the overall budgets for ABAC Place and ABAC Lakeside

 

 

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Master’s degree from an accredited college or university and experience in a campus housing environment required; experience with business aspects of campus housing strongly preferred; ability to work both collaboratively and independently with diverse constituencies; strong interpersonal communication skills; and ability to provide strong leadership as a member of the Student Life and Housing team.
