BASIC FUNCTION |
|
The
Agriculutural Specialist works to enhance the academic pursuit of students in
the animal science arena. This is
accomplished through daily laboratory exercises in which students are allowed
to perform the routine operations of today’s animal industry in a safe and
supportive learning environment. The
incumbent also works to improve the beef teaching herd and supports the ABAC
Rodeo Team. |

NATURE
& SCOPE |
|
The Agricultural Specialist
reports to the Chair of the Division of Agriculture and Forest
Resources. The incumbent supervises
two student workers. The Agricultural Specialist
has a varied job. He/She is
responsible for the operations of the ABAC farm, but he/she also must conduct
laboratory exercises for students and direct the ABAC Rodeo Team. The nature of this job requires flexibility
by the incumbent, as unexpected events in one aspect of the job may effect
other areas. The Agricultural
Specialist must demonstrate an ability to balance the requirements of a
multifaceted job. As manager of the ABAC farm
and beef cattle herd, the Agricultural Specialist must have an understanding
of the production of beef, hay, and other commodities. He/She must also be knowledgeable
concerning equipment operation and repair. In the role of teacher, the
Agricultural Specialist must prepare and instruct laboratory assignments.
This involves collaborating with animal science teachers in order to prepare
exercises that accurately display materials learned in the classroom. The
incumbent must display successful interpersonal skills in order to maximize
the educational experience of students. In addition, the
Agricultural Specialist coaches the ABAC Rodeo Team. This requires that the incumbent provide
animals, equipment, and facilities for practice. The Agricultural Specialist must also
ensure that the team members remain in good academic standing. The incumbent must schedule and attend
trips with the Rodeo Team. The Agricultural Specialist
must maximize output with a small budget.
He/She must practice fiscal responsibility in making purchases for the
farm or for the Rodeo Team. |

BUDGETARY RESPONSIBILITIES |

The incumbent is
responsible for a rodeo budget of $50,000 to $60,000. The Agricultural Specialist also works with
his/her superiors to determine the budget for the farm; the agricultural
specialist is responsible for most of the purchases on the farm. |

SPECIALIZED
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED |
|
This position requires a
two-year college or vocational school degree and five to seven years
experience in the field. The Agricultural
specialist must also have a pesticide application license, training in
artificial insemination, training in Beef Quality Assurance, and a commercial
driving license. |
