BASIC FUNCTION

 

The Academic/Career Specialist is responsible for implementing the comprehensive advisement and counseling services of programs, as well as teaching seminars as needed.  The Learning Disability Service Provider acts as a liason between students, parents, faculty, and the Regents Center for Learning Disorders (RCLD) at Georgia Southern University.  This position also assists students with obtaining and utilizing accomodations for learning disablilities and is responsible for the compliance of the College with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

 

 

NATURE & SCOPE

 

The incumbent reports to the Director of Student Support Services.  This position is not responsible for the supervision of any employees.

 

This position requires a desire to work with first generation, low income, and disabled students.  A familiarity with the issues that these student populations face is essential.  In order to serve these students, as well as to maintain compliance with federal law, the incumbent must be well versed in federal program rules and regulations and ABAC and University System of Georgia policies. The incumbent must also maintain a knowledge of current career trends and occupational information, financial aid sources, study techniques, and other practices related to serving students with disabilities.  The incumbent must utilize both on- and off-campus resources and assistive technology in order to best serve program participants.

 

The Academic/Career Specialist and Learning Disability Service Provider has the responsibility to achieve certain goals in his/her job.  Most of these jobs follow set procedure or precedent, but, given changing work conditions and circumstance, the incumbent has the latitude to choose the most appropriate course of action.

 

A priority of this position is to encourage student participation in activities after the initial need of the student has been met.  Promotion of workshops is vital to impacting the academic experience of students in the program.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

 

Ø       Recruits prospective program applicants, which primarily involves giving program presentations to classes as arranged by the SSS Coordinator

 

Ø       Interviews applicants and processes paperwork to determine eligibility for the program

 

Ø       Conducts academic advising and career counseling

 

Ø       Maintains participant records

 

Ø       Prepares monthly activity reports and information for the annual report

 

Ø       Plans and implements cultural activities for program participants

 

Ø       Assists students in determining their eligibility for learning disability accommodations and in implementing these accommodations

 

Ø       Ensures institutional compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

BUDGETARY RESPONSIBILITIES

The incumbent is not responsible for budgeting.

 

 

 

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

This position requires an advanced degree and one to three years of work experience in the field.
