BASIC FUNCTION

 

This position will work with prospective and current students providing a student-centered continuum of

information and services from enrollment to graduation.

 

NATURE & SCOPE

 

The Academic Support Counselor reports to the Deans’s Council and the VPAA.  The incumbent is not responsible for supervising any other employees.

 

The Academic Support Counselor will provide services and guidance to students in all areas of the academic process. It is important that the Academic Support Counselor be a superior communicator.   Prioritization is a key characteristic for this position as well.

 

The Academic Support Counselor will assist in organizing campus visits, student orientation programs, and information sessions for students in their assigned School.

 

In addition, innovation is required for this position.  The Academic Support Counselor must be creative in how to communicate with the students to help guide them through the process.  They will also need to facilitate communication between faculty and students as needed.

 

Examples of specific examples of communication include, but are not limited to, the use of Print/Electronic/Voice (crosses boundaries with other units) such as Facebook, Email, Blackboard Connect, Postcards, Letters, Personal Calls, Stallion newspaper advertising, Web Tailor updates, My Campus/EAI updates.

 

Assist Schools and Director of Recruitment with targeted recruitment efforts, share prospect leads, and

assist and complement on- and off-campus recruiting visits and events.

 

Assist with Face-to-face, phone or electronic inquiries from students with services including, but not limited to, Drop/adds – schedule adjustments at beginning of semester, Course withdrawals and total withdrawals, Registration issues (pre-reqs, co-reqs, LS, etc), Transient permission request (review and approval, then send to Process for recording and disbursement), Enrollment verifications received from students (including DOL ‘blue’ forms and Good student discounts), Personal info updates (name, address), Update academic standing as needed for returning students or those attending on appeal, Residency questions and communication.

 

Assist faculty/admin assistants/other units as needed with registration and graduation issues (pre-req, LS, withdrawals, academic standing updates, etc)

 

Plan, implement and follow-up with Registration campaign throughout registration period

 

Counsel students individually and in group settings regarding grades and GPAs, degree options, academic progress, dropping/adding classes, change of major, internships, extra-curricular activities, on-campus employment, scholarships, standards of academic progress, etc.

 

Responsible for the coordination of Orientation, Registration, Advising coordination and training, and teaching ABAC 1000.

BUDGETARY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Academic Support Counselors work as a team regarding the budget of the Academic Support Team.

 

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

This position requires a bachelor’s degree; master’s degree preferred, Working knowledge of technology mentioned earlier is required.
