The First Year Experience program is designed to enhance the first academic year of the Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College student and to lay the ground work for a successful college career.

Mission

The mission of the First Year Experience program at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, as a student-centered institution, is to assist in the successful transition of the freshman student during first year of college and to foster the development of academic, social, and civic skills which will assist the ABAC freshman in the pursuit of a career and future education. The program will assist the freshman student in understanding the expectations of the college culture, encouraging and empowering the student to seek support for success, ultimately improving retention.

Core Values

ABAC students will exhibit strength of character, appreciation for the campus and community, and develop personal competence.

Goals

    • Create a smooth transition to the freshman year of college
    • Help students develop character traits needed for success in college and beyond
    • Establish a life-long connection to ABAC
    • Engage students is civic participation
    • Educate the student on issues of personal safety
    • Establish effective time management skills
    • Provide the knowledge and skills for self-directed learning
    • Provide opportunities for leadership and service learning
    • Foster the development of independent and critical thinking skills
    • Expose students to diverse ideas, experiences, and people
    • Promote the establishment of healthy lifestyles
    • Provide students with support to be academically and socially successful
    • Increase retention rates by ten percent for participants
    • Provide effective communication skills for academic, social, and professional growth
