Lake Baldwin Nuisance Plant Removal
September 8,2011

23 Club members worked several hours removing Chara and filamentous algae from Lake Baldwin.  The work greatly improves the aesthetics of the lake and opened up a few more fishing holes for campus anglers.

GEORGIA CHAPTER OF THE WILDLIFE SOCIETY MEETING
August 31 and September 1,2011

20 Club members travelled to Athens, Georgia, for the annual fall meeting of the Georgia Chapter of The Wildlife Society.  The students got the opportunity to see a variety of presentations on wildlife conservation in Georgia, as well as meet and interact with southeastern wildlife professionals.

NUISANCE GOOSE CAPTURE
June 27, 2011

Club members spent the morning assisting USDA-APHIS Wildlife Services personnel capture and band 54 nuisance geese at a city park in Valdosta, Georgia.

SPRING ADOPT-A-MILE CLEANUP

Club members spent the afternoon cleaning up trash and debris from the club's adopted mile of highway in Tift County, Georgia.

2011 SOUTHEASTERN WILDLIFE STUDENT CONCLAVE
March 17-20, 2011

Fifteen Club members travelled to Auburn University for the annual Southeastern Wildlife Student Conclave.
  The club members  competed against students from 18 other colleges and universities in a variety of competitions.  The ABAC team finished 7th out of 19 competing schools.

PRESIDENT CARTER'S WOOD DUCK BOX MAINTENANCE
February 19, 2011

Club members travelled to Plains, GA, to refurbish and monitor nesting activity in wood duck boxes on various tracts of land owned by President Jimmy Carter.  Club members get the opportunity to meet and discuss various conservation issues with the former President.

GREAT OUTDOORS SHOW, PERRY, GEORGIA
February 11-13, 2011

Club members volunteered for the Georgia Wildlife Federation (GWF) at the 2011 Great Outdoors Show in Perry, Georgia.  Students assisted GWF personnel with a variety of event activities, including operating several children’s events, serving as security, assisting vendors, collecting tickets, and setting up and taking down booths.

SCHOOLYARD WILDLIFE PROJECT AT LEN
LASTINGER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
January 23, 2011

Club members worked several hours refurbishing and rebuilding planting areas at Len Lastinger Elementary School.  The areas are used for bird and butterfly plantings.  Although much of the work was back-breaking, the end results were worth it.

LONGLEAF PINE SEEDLING PLANTING
January and February, 2011

As a fundraising project, the Club planted approximately 12,000 containerized longleaf seedling for a local landowner.  The club members braved cold, windy, and wet weather over several weekends to make money for Conclave and other club activities.

THERMAL CAMERA DEMONSRATION
December 2, 2010

The Club hosted Dr. Mike Conner, Research Ecologist at the Jones Ecological Research Center, who gave a presentation and demonstration of the Center’s thermal video camera, a tool with some unique uses in wildlife management and research.  After strapping/taping the television and camcorder into the ABAC bus, we all hopped on and road the county roads in search of animals.

ABAC CHILI COOKOFF
November 15, 2010

In order to recruit new members, promote the student chapter, and raise funds, the club co-hosted a Chili Cookoff with the ABAC Cattlemen’s Club on the college campus.  The Cookoff contained a wildlife category and a beef category.  13 students competed and over 60 people attended the event.

LOGGERHEAD SEA TURTLE PRESENTATION
November 18, 2010

The Club hosted Jason Scott, a PhD candidate at the University of Georgia, who gave a campus-wide presentation on Loggerhead Sea Turtle Management in Georgia.  Students and faculty members from all over campus enjoyed a wonderful presentation on the management of this endangered species in Georgia.

BATS OF GEORGIA PRESENTATION
November 4, 2010

The Club hosted Katrina Morris, a wildlife biologist with the Georgia DNR’s Nongame Conservation Section, who gave a campus-wide presentation on the bats of Georgia and the threat of White nose syndrome to the state’s bat populations.

ABAC CAMPUS HAY BALE DECORATING CONTEST
October 26, 2011

The Forestry & Wildlife Club competed in the annual hay bale decorating competition on the ABAC campus.  The Club won first place for its “Vampire Raccoon”.

FLINT RIVER WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA HANDICAP HUNT
October 22-23, 2010

Forestry & Wildlife Club members volunteered at the Flint River WMA’s Handicap Hunt.  Club members assisted the hunters with their equipment and harvested animals.  Students weighed and field-dressed the harvested deer and removed the jawbones for age estimation.

ABAC FORESTRY & WILDLIFE CLUB ARCHERY SHOOT
October 21, 2010 

In order to recruit new members and raise funds, the club sponsored an archery shoot at the ABAC Nature Study Area.  Ten 3-D targets were set up throughout the Nature Study Area for the event.  The event allows Club members to interact with and recruit students from the entire campus.  Numerous club members and non-members from all over campus participated in the event.

KID'S AND SENIOR CITIZEN'S FISHING EVENT
October 16, 2010

The ABAC Forestry & Wildlife Club co-hosted the annual event with the Tifton Police Department and the GA DNR.  Members assisted with events.  Students helped kids and senior citizens by distributing bait and removing hooks from fish.  The students also operated a casting competition for the kids and worked in the Club’s wildlife information and education tent to educate the public about wildlife resources.

JAKE'S DAY AT PARADISE PUBLIC FISHING AREA
September 25, 2010 

29 club members worked with the GA DNR and the National Wild Turkey Federation at the Jake’s Day held at Paradise Public Fishing Area (PFA).  Over 820 children registered for the event in 2010, with approximately 600 parents and guardians attending as well.  Students assisted in the event by coordinating parking and operating the archery and air rifle events, which teaches kids how to safely use bows and guns, and other activities.  Students also worked in the Chapter’s wildlife information and education tent, which displays study skins, skulls, posters, and wildlife-related equipment such as dart guns and radio telemetry devices, to inform the public about wildlife resources.

GA TWS CHAPTER FALL 2010 MEETING
August 26-27, 2010

ABAC Forestry & Wildlife Club members traveled to Forsyth, GA, for the fall meeting of the GA Chapter of The Wildlife Society.  Members attended and learned about Georgia’s current natural resource issues and about ongoing wildlife research in the Southeast, and they also took advantage of opportunities to interact with southeastern natural resource professionals.

August 20-22, 2010

Club members volunteered for the Georgia Wildlife Federation (GWF) at the 2010 Perry Buckarama.  Students assisted GWF personnel with a variety of event activities, including operating several children’s events, serving as security, assisting vendors, collecting tickets, and setting up and taking down booths.

GEORGIA MUSEUM OF AGRICULTURE (AGRIRAMA) PINE RESIN COLLECTION PROJECT
August 2010

Club members volunteered numerous hours assisting in the collection of pine resin for the Georgia Museum of Agriculture in Tifton, Georgia.  Members drilled and tapped mature pines and installed collection bags.  In April 2011, the Museum used the sap in a demonstration involving the historical techniques involved in turpentine boiling.  The resin products were sold and the funds will be used to support future museum activities.

ATLANTA BUCKARAMA
August 6-8, 2010

Club members volunteered for the Georgia Wildlife Federation (GWF) at the 2010 Atlanta Buckarama Show.  Students assisted GWF personnel with a variety of event activities, including serving as security, collecting tickets, and setting up booths.
