MUSIC APPRECIATION, MUSC 1100

 

Course Description:

An introduction into the basics of music and a study of masterpieces of music literature, as well as a brief overview of the history of music. This course is designed for those individuals who have little background or basic knowledge of music. Fall, Spring, Summer.

 

Pre-requisites/Co-requisites:

Prerequisite: Exemption from or successful completion of READ 0099 and ENGL 0099.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

 

           By the end of the semester, the diligent student shall:

 

  1. demonstrate a basic understanding of the various musical styles/periods.
  2. will aurally recognize basic pieces from the various musical styles/periods
  3. will demonstrate an ability to critique a musical performance be written assignment.

 

 

 

RATIONALE:

Abraham Baldwin requires as a part of their core curriculum six hours in the area of   Humanities.  This course is a part of the required curriculum of the College. This course is designed to be an introduction into the basics of music and a study of masterpieces of music literature, as well as a brief overview of the history of music. It is intended for the non-music major who has had little background or basic knowledge of music.

 

 

METHODOLOGY:

The focus of this course will be a treatment of Joseph Machlis and Kristine Forney’s The Enjoyment of Music. We will be covering most of the main periods of music with their composers and illustrative examples.

 

GRADING:

Students will be graded according to the following schedule:

 

            Objective Exams-

                        Midterm                                    20%

                        Final                                          20%

            Listening Exams-

                        Midterm                                    20%

                        Final                                          20%

                       

            Performance/Listening Assignments    20%

 

There is one live performance that is required. Missing this performance and not completing the required paper will result in the lowering of the final grade by 10 %.

 

There are two video performances (worth 5% each for a total of 10%) that are required. Missing any of these performances and not completing in class comments                                              will result in the lowering of the final grade.  

 

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

 

 A. Listening CD’s

Since an objective of this course is to introduce the student to music, listening requirements will be assigned. The student must purchase the textbook, The Enjoyment of Music, 10th edition, shorter with four listening CD’S and one resource CD included and listen in order to understand a particular composer’s work or a genre of a given music period. There will be a portion of the listening assignments covered in each test to see if the student was an active participator in the course.

 

B. Tests

There will be four tests in the course of this semester.  Make-up tests will not be given except under unusual circumstances. A student may not miss the final exam or a grade of ‘F’ will be assigned for the semester.

 

 

C. Listening Assignments- READ CAREFULLY

Each student will be required to attend three classical performances during the semester.  The student must critique the three performances.

 

Critiques must meet the following requirements:

 

1. The critique will need to be at least 500 words and two pages in length. You  

    must put your name in the upper left hand corner of this review.

 

2. The critiques must be typed with double spacing using a font size of 12.

 

3. Critiques must include musical terms about each performance. Rewriting of.

                program notes for one’s paper will not be acceptable. It would be beneficial to

                read Attending Concerts that can be found on page 4 of your textbook before

                the first scheduled performance. An example of an acceptable critique can be

                found on the Web book link for your text
