Terminology Review:
1. Overweight – Characterized by a body weight that falls above the range associated with minimum mortality: weighing 10% or more over recommended weight or having a BMI over 25.
2. Obesity – Severely overweight, with an excess of body fat: weighing 20% or more over recommended weight or having a BMI over 30.
3. Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) - The energy required (in calories) to maintain vital body functions, including respiration, heart rate, body temperature, and blood pressure, while the body is at rest.
4. Binge eating - A pattern of eating in which normal food consumption is interrupted by episodes of high consumption.
5. Self-talk - The internal comments and discussions a person carries on; instrumental in shaping self-image.
6. Anorexia Nervosa - An eating disorder characterized by an intense fear of weight gain leading to self-starvation and excessive weight loss.
7. Bulimia Nervosa - An eating disorder characterized by alternating binging and purging through vomiting, laxatives, or diuretics. Bulimics can be at normal weight or overweight.
8. Body Image – The mental representation a person holds about her or his body at any given moment in time, consisting of perceptions, im ages, thoughts, attitudes, and emotions about the body.
9. Muscle dysmorphia – A disorder characterized by distorted body image; affected people inaccurately perceive themselves as small, with underdeveloped muscles.
10. Purging – The use of vomiting, laxatives, excessive exercise, restrictive dieting, enemas, diuretics, or diet pills to compensate for food that has been eaten and that the person fears will produce weight gain.
11. Binge-eating disorder – An eating disorder characterized by binge eating and a lack of control over eating behavior in general.
