ABAC Quiz Bowl Team Takes First Place for Second Year in a Row
February 16, 2017
The Forestry Quiz Bowl Team at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College finished in first place for the second year in a row at the Southeastern Section, Society of American Foresters meeting, held recently in Miramar Beach, Fla.
Coached by Dr. Renaldo Arroyo, assistant professor of forest resources, the ABAC team defeated Alabama A&M University, Auburn University, the University of Florida, and the University of Georgia.
“This year’s team was made up of two sophomores, one junior, and one senior,” said Arroyo. “They had no prior experience and worked really hard to achieve what they did. The students practiced so much that I had to come up with more questions, so much so that Assistant Professor of Forest Resources Kip Hall, another forestry professor who coaches the students, and I pretty much ran out of questions.”
The team included Harrison Booker of Varnell, Joey Garrett of Box Springs, Jarvis Ballard of Lenox, and Ben Rampy of Fayetteville. All of the students are majoring in the natural resource management bachelor’s degree at ABAC.
“They progressed and got better each day of practice, and the practices were highly competitive,” said Arroyo. “I was told by the students that they were so ready in the final round against Alabama A&M that they broke the buzzer while ringing in on the first question.
“The moderator hadn’t even finished asking the question. The Forestry Department could not be prouder of their accomplishments. This is now two years in a row, and we hope to continue the trend.”
