Watermelon Crawl 5K and Fun Run July 9 at ABAC

June 16, 2016

The third annual Watermelon Crawl 5K and Fun Run will take place on July 9 on the campus of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.

Dr. Ray Smith, Department Head for Agriculture in the School of Agriculture and Natural Resources, said the event is a fundraiser to establish the Jerry Moore Memorial Scholarship at ABAC.  Once the endowment funds are in place, the scholarship will be awarded each year to a student majoring in agriculture.  Moore was an ABAC alumnus who passed away in 2013 at the age of 46.

“The past two years of this fundraiser have been very successful, and we hope the endowment will be completed with this year’s event,” Smith said.  “Then we can begin awarding the scholarship.”

Open to anyone who would like to participate, individual runners can register for the Watermelon Crawl for a fee of $23 that includes a t-shirt and a runner’s bag. Any ABAC faculty or staff paying via cash or check will have their registration fee discounted to $20.  Phantom runners who may not be able to participate in the race can register for $25, and families (up to six members of immediate family) interested in running can register for $75. Registration is now open at

Participants can also register the day of the race at a cost of $25 for individual runners and $85 for families.  Registration begins at 7:15 a.m. on race day, and the 5K will start at 8 a.m.  Those who aren’t participating in the 5K can walk the 5K path or take part in the one-mile fun run, which begins at 9 a.m.

An early packet pick-up, cookout, and silent auction will be held on July 8 from 6-8 p.m.  The packet includes the runner’s bib, shirt, and bag.  All registered runners eat for free, and the general public can enjoy the meal for a fee of $5.

Registration is required for anyone who would like to receive a t-shirt and a runner’s bag as part of the race.  Payment can be made via the website.  Runners who prefer not to register for the race online can bring a form of payment to Josie Smith in the Office of College Advancement on the ABAC campus or mail their registration to Josie Smith, Office of College Advancement, ABAC 13, 2802 Moore Highway, Tifton, Ga., 31793.

Tax deductible donations can be made to the scholarship fund for those persons not participating in the event. Checks should be made payable to the ABAC Foundation. For more information on the Watermelon Crawl, interested persons can visit or contact Josie Smith at
