Baldwin Players Announce Cast for ‘The Birds’

October 6, 2016

Cast members have been selected for “The Birds,” the Baldwin Players’ upcoming fall production at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.

Dr. Brian Ray, director for the theatre troupe, said “The Birds” will be staged in Howard Auditorium at 7 p.m. on Oct. 27-29. Admission is free to ABAC faculty, staff and students. The ticket cost is $10 per person for the general public. Due to some of the themes and language, this production may not be suitable for persons under 17 years of age.

Written by Greek comic playwright Aristophanes, ‘The Birds” has been recognized by today’s critics as a masterful work of fantasy.  It was first performed in 414 B.C.E. at the City Dionysia festival, where it won second prize. The story follows Pisthetairos, a middle-aged Athenian who convinces the world’s birds to form a new city in the sky (thereby gaining control over all communications between men and gods), and is himself eventually and miraculously transformed into a bird-like god figure, replacing Zeus as the pre-eminent power in the cosmos.

Cast members include Dylan Bennett as Pisthetairos, Keri Jones as Euelpides/Poseidon, Devun Pitts as Tereus, Lauren Slaughter as Prometheus, Caroline Kirkland as the Commissioner/Princess, Gina Wilson as the Triballian goddess, Nijia Pinkney as Iris and the Statute Seller, Amber Dillard as the messenger, and Angela Ramos-Santodomingo as the Chorus Leader.  The roles of Trochilus, Hercules, and Herald are to be announced at a later time.

Bennett is a theatre major from Sylvester; Jones is an ABAC alumna who is a certified public accountant with Allen, Pritchett, and Bassett LLP in Tifton; Pitts is a biology major from Tifton; Slaughter is a nursing major from Locust Grove; Kirkland is a biology major from Tifton; Wilson is a staff member in the ABAC School of Liberal Arts; Pinkney is a biology major from Warmer Robins, Dillard is a nursing major from Fitzgerald; and Ramos-Santodomingo is a music major from Santa Marta, Colombia.

The chorus includes Emily Adams, an agricultural business major from Hilliard, Fla.; Alicia Anderson, a writing and communications major from Tifton; Linda Aycock, a livestock production major from Fitzgerald; Nolan Barbour, a general studies major from Tifton; Aarian McGee, a general studies major from Ashburn; Meredith McGlamory, an agricultural communications major from Abbeville; Ajoya Monell, a biological/agricultural engineering major from Conyers; Amara Muldrow, a biology major from Macon; Michael Brogdon, a Tifton community member; Rachel Taylor, a biological/agricultural engineering major from Douglas; Brianna Thomas, a biology major from Hahira; Aaliyah Smith, a livestock production major from Macon; and Kaylee Stokes, a writing and communications major from Tifton.
