November 15, 2016

Almost 300 choral students from area high schools enjoyed a day of tutelage with world-renowned choral composer, conductor, and clinician Professor Joseph M. Martin on Nov. 10 at the 10th annual Choral Day at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.

High schools and their choral directors that participated in this year’s event included Cook High School with Teresa Williams, Crisp County High School with Jenny Richmond, Fitzgerald High School with Joanie Paulk, Lee County High School with Brad Bunce, Tift County High School – Northeast Campus with Sheri Wyles, Tift County High School with Scott Rains, Wilcox County High School with Vickie Brown, and Worth County High School with Lesli Holton. Retired choral director of Colquitt County and former Georgia State ACDA President, Kathy Wright from Valdosta, GA also attended the event.

The high school students practiced with members of the ABAC Chamber Singers, and the ABAC voice majors’ group, “Canticum Novum,” before joining the ABAC students for an afternoon concert on the ABAC campus.

Dr. Susan Roe, Head of the Department of Fine Arts and a Professor of Voice, said this year’s guest clinician was composer Joseph Martin. Martin’s music can be heard in such diverse locations as Carnegie Hall and Lindon Center in New York City; Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., The Lawrence Welk Theatre in Branson, Mo., St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City; and in hundreds of worship services in churches across the United States and Canada.

Martin earned his Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance at Furman University and his Master of Music degree in piano performance at the University of Texas. He is now the Artist in Residence at Concordia University in Austin, Tex., where he lives with his wife, Sue, and their children Jonathan and Aubrey.
