Welcome Week Activities Begin August 8 at ABAC

July 30, 2015

Entering freshmen will experience college life for the first time on Aug. 8 with the start of the annual Welcome Week festivities at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. Welcome Week, now in its ninth year, introduces new students to the college through a number of activities and experiences, leading to the start of the fall semester on Aug. 12.

Welcome Week begins with First-Year Move-In from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. on Aug. 8. The ABAC Pool will be open from 1-6 p.m. for students to cool off after their move. The day’s events culminate with a “No-booze-a-palooza” at Lakeside Lobby from 8-11 p.m.

On Aug. 9, students will assemble in Gressette Gym for the Welcome Rally, the official start of Welcome Week. After the rally, students can take advantage of the ABAC Pool from 4-9 p.m. From 7-9 p.m. students can gather at the Lakeside Lawn to take part in “So You Think You Can Tie Dye” before cooling off with SnoBiz snow cones while watching “Furious 7” under the stars with Screen on the Green. The movie begins at 9 p.m.

From 10-10:45 a.m. on Aug. 10, students can get to know their campus and community with a brief information session in Howard Auditorium followed by tours of the campus and Tifton. Once back on campus, they can cool off with a dip in the ABAC Pool from 11 a.m.-7 p.m.

Lake Baldwin will be the setting for the Cardboard Boat Races from 2-3 p.m. Sink or swim with this ABAC tradition to see which team can make the best boat using only duct tape and cardboard boxes to race across Lake Baldwin. Supplies will be provided, and prizes will be given out to the most “effective” boat. All boats must be assembled during the event, not before. Students can end their day by being mesmerized by hypnotist William Mitchell at 8 p.m. in Howard Auditorium.

On Aug. 11, the Freshman Convocation begins at 11 a.m. in Gressette Gym. The convocation signals the close of Welcome Week and the start of a new academic year.  A Meet-n-Eat will immediately follow the event from noon-2 p.m. at the Donaldson Dining Hall. Students are encouraged to come and meet the ABAC faculty and staff. The pool opens from 1-6 p.m. so that students can enjoy a relaxing afternoon before fall term classes begin on Aug. 12.
