ABAC Concert Band Performances November 17-18

November 6, 2014

From a lively march tune to the patriotic “Yankee Doodle,” the fall concert by the Concert Band at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College promises something for everyone on Nov. 17-18. Due to popular demand, the concert will be presented two nights at 7 p.m. in Howard Auditorium.

Concert Band Director Johnny Folsom said the concert on Nov. 17 will be directed toward ABAC students and high school students who may want to attend ABAC one day. A second concert will be held for the community on Nov. 18. There is no charge for either concert.

“We welcome our community members to attend on the evening of November 18, but if conflicts prevent them from coming on that date, those in the community are welcome to attend the November 17 performance,” Folsom said.

The concert begins with the exciting “Gallop” from Dmitri Shostakovich’s operetta “Moscow, Cheremushky.”  It will be followed by Claude T. Smith’s masterful setting of our national hymn, “God of Our Fathers.”

Guest conductor Grady Brackin will conduct John Philip Sousa’s “Golden Jubilee” march.  Principal clarinetist Ashley Connelly, a music major from Ochlocknee, will be featured on “Immer Kleiner,” a German composition where the soloist disassembles the clarinet as she is playing.

The band will then play Jay Bocook’s arrangement of Puccini’s beautiful aria “Nessun Dorma” before transporting the audience back to war-time Vietnam with a graphic composition titled “Mekong” by Robert W. Smith. Closing out the fall concert will be “American Flourish,” a showcase for band based on folk songs “Yankee Doodle,” “When Johnny Comes Marching Home,” and “Shenandoah.”

Seating is limited for both concerts so guests are encouraged to arrive early for a good seat. For more information on this performance, interested persons can contact Folsom at (229) 391-4944.
