Second Annual ‘Run for the Nurses’ April 13 at ABAC

TIFTON – Registration is now open for the second annual “Run for the Nurses” on April 13 at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.

Participants can choose from a one-mile fun run, a 5K run or a half marathon.  All proceeds benefit the Lisa Purvis Allison Spirit of Nursing Scholarship Fund.  The action begins at 8 a.m. on April 13 at the Red Hill Athletics Center at ABAC.

The cost for participants is $20 for the one-mile run, $30 for the 5K, and $35 for the half marathon.   Interested participants can register online at www.active.com through April 10.  Participants can also register at the Health Sciences Building on the ABAC campus or by going to www.abac.edu/academics/schools/nursing and printing a registration form.

For more information on the “Run for the Nurses” event, interested persons can contact Becky Arnold at (229) 391-5024 or e-mail her at rarnold@abac.edu.

Trophies will be presented to the first place finishers in the fun run, and medals will be awarded to all finishers 14 years of age and younger.  In the 5K and half marathon, trophies will be awarded to the overall and master overall male and female finishers, and medals will be given to the top three male and female finishers in various age groups.  All half marathon finishers will receive a medal.

Allison began the nursing program at ABAC as a single parent of two children following the accidental death of her husband.  While completing the final year of the program, she was diagnosed with colon cancer.  An outstanding student, Allison completed requirements for graduation, successfully passed her state board exam and was licensed as a registered nurse.

Unfortunately, she did not get to practice the profession of nursing as she lost her battle with cancer in 2009.  Allison’s family and friends set up the scholarship to honor students with her same genuine caring attitude and compassion.  The scholarship is awarded twice a year to a nursing student who meets the criteria to assist with final semester expenses.
