Who must take the COMPASS test?

Incoming students must take the COMPASS placement test with these exceptions:

Students with a College Prep Diploma and SAT Scores above 480 or ACT scores above 20 are not required to take the COMPASS.

Students who transfer in a college level course (ENGL 1101 or MATH 1111) are not required to take the COMPASS.

Students who have taken the COMPASS test at another USG school and have scores that meet ABAC's COMPASS cut-off scores are also not required to test.

Students who have taken the ASSET or COMPASS at a COC accredited Georgia vocational College that meet the ABAC's cut-off scores are also not required to test. Please note that scores should appear on the transcript.

How long are Placement Test (ACT/SAT/COMPASS) scores valid?

ABAC will accept scores up to three years old.  Students with scores older than this will be required to take the COMPASS Placement Test unless they have transfer credit in English Composition (for English and Reading COMPASS Test) or College-level mathematics (for Math COMPASS Test). All Compass scores from other institutions have to be received by the Compass Testing Center before the first day of school.

Compass scores required to exempt placement in Learning Support classes:

● Algebra ≥ 37

Students must meet these minimum requirements:

2. Meet these minimum Compass scores:

● Reading 62

●English 32

Can a student retake the COMPASS test?

Students may retest before the first day of class.  Students are encouraged to practice for Compass using the Learning Support website before they retest.  A $20 fee is assessed regardless of the number of subject areas taken.  The retest may not take place on the same date as the initial test. There will be no Compass placement testing after a student begins classes.

How do students register to take the COMPASS exam?

A student must go online to  www.abac.edu/compass  and complete the registration form.  A student can choose the date and time of testing. The same process is used to schedule a retest date. Students schedule remote testing also at this site.
