Compass Placement Test FAQs


Who must take the test?

  • All entering students are required to take the placement test, unless  exempt.

May I exempt the test?

  • Students with a College Preparatory Diploma may not be required to take all parts of the placement test if they:

         Scored 480 or above on SAT Verbal or Critical Reading
         Scored 480 or above on SAT Math or

         Scored 20 or above on ACT English or

         Scored 20 or above on ACT Math.
         Scored 260 or above on the GHSGT-HELA


What about transfer students?

  • Since each transfer situation is different, please call Enrollment Services (229)-391-5004 to find out if you need to take the placement test.

What should I do if I need to take the placement test?

  • All placement testing is scheduled by appointment and must be completed before you come to New Student Orientation.

What do I need to bring when I take the test?

  • A photo ID is required to take the placement test.
  • An approved calculator is permitted for the math placement test.
Testers may  bring personal calculators.

To ensure fairness for all test takers, avoid disturbances in the testing room, and protect the security of the testing materials and process, the following types of calculators are not permitted:

  • Pocket organizers
  • Handheld or laptop computers
  • Electronic writing pads or pen-input devices—The Sharp EL 9600 is permitted.
  • Models with a QWERTY (typewriter) keypad (although calculators with letters on the keys are permitted as long as the keys are not arranged in QWERTY format)
  • Models with built-in capability to simplify algebraic expressions, multiply polynomials, or factor polynomials (often called Computer Algebra Systems)—Prohibited calculators in this category include:
    • Casio: Algebra fx 2.0, ClassPad 300, and all model numbers that begin with CFX-9970G
    • Texas Instruments: All model numbers that begin with TI-89 or TI-92
    • Hewlett-Packard: hp 48GII and all model numbers that begin with hp 40G or hp 49G

How do my COMPASS Scores affect my academic program? 

Learning Support courses are designed to help students acquire the skills needed to succeed in college-level work.  

  1. Reading: Students with a COMPASS Reading score between 62 - 73 are placed in READ 0099.
  2. Writing: Students with a COMPASS Writing score between 32 - 59 are placed in ENGL 0099.
  3. Algebra: Students with a Compass Algebra score between 20-36 are placed in MATH 0097

May I re-test if I am not satisfied with my scores?

  • Students may retest  in each subject area. Students must retest before their New Student Orientation.  All retesting must take place prior to the first day of class. A $20 fee is assessed regardless of the number of subject areas taken.  The retest may not take place on the same date as the initial test.
