First Thoughts of Woodie Guthrie

James M. E. Gibson
First Place, Poetry
Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College

You don't really hear
About him, no more
Than Santa Claus,
Just not as commercial.
'Cept maybe in Elementary
When you learn whose land is which land
But it sure ain't the communists'.
Next thing you know you're hearin'
The last thoughts given you the first thoughts
And you start to grieve
Never knowin' - the man, the music, the life.
You go to discover, to listen
Riding the turntable across
The universe, or maybe just the south.
You think to follow his path,
Follow his tracks, roads, and trails
Findin' out you'd known it all along
It's just the song you're hearin' now.
It makes you want to scream, to shout
To sit quietly, to figure it all out.
Till you find yourself  looking over
Sayin' thanks for your words,
my words, our story.
