Guest Lecturer: Dr. Toni Anderson – The Story of the Fisk Jubilee Singers

Comments: Dr. Toni Anderson is the Chair of Vocal Music at LaGrange College.  She is the winner of the 47th Georgia Author of the Year Award for her book TELL THEM WE ARE SINGING FOR JESUS: THE ORIGINAL FISK JUBILEE SINGERS AND CHRISTIAN RECONSTRUCTION, 1871-1878. This lecture begins with a brief overview of the abolition movement, the formation of the American Missionary Association, and the founding of Fisk University. The birth of the Jubilee Singers and their historic, ground-breaking tours forms the heart of the lecture, including the ensemble's struggles, ultimate triumphs, and significant contribution to the advancement of civil rights.
