|The ABAC Tennis Teams competed in the ITA Southeast Regional Tournament this weekend at home. It turned out to be a great weekend for the Stallions and the Fillies. ASA Miami, the reigning 3 time national champions, were the team to beat on the men’s side.
Four Stallions advanced to the quarter finals of the singles. Lucas Gobet lost in three sets to Federico Gomez the number one seed from ASA Miami, Eymeric Chevalier lost to Sascha Modica the number 4 seed from ASA Miami, and Matthias Rogel lost to Martin Mendoza the number 3 seed from ASA Miami. Yohan Nguyen, the number 2 seed, defeated the number 5 seed from ASA Miami 6-2 6-0. In the semi final match against Mendoza, Yohan lost the first set 6-4 but fought hard in the next two sets to win 6-2 6-4. In the final against Gomez, he started well and won a close first set 7-5. Gomez started to fade in the second set and Yohan took that 6-0 to become the regional singles champion. He will advance to the ITA Oracle Cup to be played in Surprise, AZ October 13-16 for a chance to become national champion.
In doubles two Stallion pairs lost in the semi finals to ASA Miami. Eymeric and Yohan had chances to win but lost a close one 9-8.
The Fillies had a very successful event, putting all four singles players in the semi finals. Celia Morel beat Cyrielle Peyroche 6-3 6-1 in one semi final and Oriane Yehouenou beat Melissa Ariza 6-4 6-4 in the other. Celia then beat Oriane 6-4 6-1 in the final to become regional singles champion. Celia and Oriane then teamed up to win the doubles event defeating Kawula and Healy from Oxford College in the final 6-2 6-0. These two will also advance to the ITA Oracle Cup in Surprise, AZ to compete for an individual national title.
Overall it was great to see the Stallions and Fillies competing at such a high level in the first tournament of the year. Many of the freshman produced solid performances from which they can build on for the rest of the Fall and into the Spring semester. I am excited to take the 3 players to Arizona for nationals and see how they compete on the national stage.
