| Stallions Tee off against Darton State
By: Dalton Spangler, Staff Writer
The golf team wrapped up their fall season with a scrimmage against district leaders, Darton State on Oct. 29 in Albany at Stonebridge Golf and Country Club.
The team was originally scheduled to play in the MGCCC Fall Invitational in Gulfport, Mississippi but decided not to attend this year due to weather condition. Darton also decided not to go, so the coaches set up a scrimmage to fight practice grind and give the players something more interesting to do.
The match was set up as best ball on the front 9 and alternating on the back 9. Best ball is the best score out of the two partner’s scores being counted towards the final score and alternating is when partners would use one ball and alternate with every stroke.
The team played hard against Darton but couldn’t quite come out on top. Jeb Stewart and Colton Wyllie won holes 16 and 18 to finish the match as a tie. Lane Jowers was down 4 holes with 3 to play, and Daniel Nunn and Austin Bowman were down 5 holes with 3 to play.
Overall it’s pack season, that has developed the kids’ individual game, according to golf coach Larry Byrnes. Coach Byrnes is confident that his team can win regionals and make it to nationals in the spring season, as they are a hard-working bunch.
Byrnes aims to help the team work on consistency, into the spring season, believing that the only things separating ABAC’s golf team from schools like Alabama is the short game.
September 1, 2015 – Your ABAC Golf team travelled to
Alabama to play in the Wallace State Invitational. The Stallions
finished 7th out of 12 teams. Ty Gore led the way with 72-79-72.
No matter what time of year it is, warm weather and blue skies are never far away in Tifton. Those weather conditions bode well for the ABAC golf team which has become a force to be reckoned with in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA).
The Stallions compete against Georgia teams as well as squads from surrounding states. ABAC always plays a fall tournament schedule as well as a very tough spring lineup of matches.
The Stallions never lack for a practice site since ABAC owns and operates the nine-hole Forest Lakes Golf Club. Tifton Ophthalmologist Larry Moorman and his wife, Debra, donated the $1 million course to the ABAC Foundation in January, 2002.
ABAC uses the Forest Lakes course for practice and plays home tournaments at Ironwood Golf & Country Club Community.
