  Laughing Matters

Laughing Matters is Atlanta's longest running improvisational comedy troupe serving up laughter since 1985. Its current president, Tommy Futch, has ties to South Georgia growing up in Nashville and attending ABAC in the late 70s. The group will cater each performance to the audience mix with their ability to reach out to kids and to entertain adults. Laughing Matters will appear on the Arts Circus/International Stage on Sunday with three shows.

Tommy Futch was injured in a collision near Adel, GA in 1971. He was paralyzed from the waist down – his world was dramatically changed. He dabbled in school, work and self-fulfillment. In 1985, Futch took a comedy course and discovered his passion – improve comedy. He and dozen partners soon formed Laughing Matters, an improve comedy troupe. As years passed and partners moved on, Futch became president and expanded the company's mission. Now Laughing Matters repertoire includes team building, murder mysteries, game shows, scavenger hunts and school programs.

Futch has worked alongside and coached Mitch Rouse, a former Laughing Matters member, who helped write the comedy film "Without a Paddle" and Joe Kelly, a writer for Saturday Night Live. He also worked with Gary Anthony Williams, who is part of the cast of Jeff Foxworthy's hit show "Blue Collar Comedy Tour" and can be seen on ABC's “Boston Legal.” Kelly, who worked with Laughing Matters from 1993 to 1998, credits the troupe with teaching him "clean" humor. "I learned to be funny, as opposed to shocking," said Kelly.
