Georgia and Adjacent States (Brown and Kirkman)
Common Trees of Central South Georgia (Faircloth) (copy provided)
EQUIPMENT: Pocketknife

ATTENDANCE: Students whose number
of unexcused absences from class/lab exceeds six (6) will receive an "F" for the
course. Unexcused absences less than the maximum allowable will result in
fractional participation deduction from the final grade. For example, one
unexcused absence out of six (6) maximum results in 16.7% participation penalty.
Students should advise the instructor of anticipated absences in advance
when possible; informative messages may be left at (229)391-4800. All
excused absences must be accompanied by written documentation; final
evaluation of excuse legitimacy resides with the instructor.
TARDINESS:
A student entering class late will be considered absent for that day.
Tardiness will result
in zero (0) scores for pop lecture quizzes or lab field quizzes; THE BUS WAITS
FOR NO
ONE, unless there are extenuating circumstances.
CHEATING:
Absolutely, positively not tolerated. Cheaters receive an automatic F for
the course.
There will be no talking or answer "sharing" during lab quizzes.
GRADE BASE: Two (2)

20%
Final exam (lab cumulative)
25%
Outdoor field quizzes, indoor field quizzes, pop lecture quizzes
50%
BEHAVIOR, attitude, attendance, participation
5%*
Attendance will be a factor in determining borderline grades.
*Chronic misbehavior may result in forfeiture of some or all five (5)
participation percentage points. A minimum of three (3) indoor field quizzes will be
taken;
additional indoor quizzes will be a response to weather OR
inappropriate
student behavior. Field quizzes may not be dropped or made up.
GRADING SCALE: 90 - 100% =
A
80 - 89% = B
70 - 79% = C
65 - 69% = D
Less than 65 = F
POLICIES:
Students will not be permitted to review their hourly exams at any time other
than
the in-class review session (usually the next lecture after exam): hourly
exams will
not be available prior to finals. Short notes may be taken during
class review of
exams. Makeup hourly exams will not be given - extra weight will be
assigned to
the FINAL exam for excused absences. Hourly exam dates will be
announced well
in advance. Final exams will not be given early or late. Final exam
scores and
course grades will not be posted.
COURSE OUTLINE
LABORATORY OBJECTIVES:
- To learn the field identification of approximately 130
native and introduced species of trees, shrubs, and woody vines.
- To become acquainted with the use of dichotomous plant keys
for identifying unknown specimens.
Technical descriptions of the leaves, twigs, buds, fruit, and bark will be provided for each species, as well as important silvic characteristics. Personal observations are encouraged. Accurate field identification will not be attained by reliance on a single species characteristic. Field quizzes will be conducted during every laboratory outing, except the first; scientific names (genus, species) and common names will be provided by the student.
LECTURE OBJECTIVES:
- To acquaint students with important aspects of forest
biology that relate dendrology to other forest sciences.
- To acquaint students with important characteristics of
native and foreign species most often encountered in forestry and wildlife
management.
For each species covered, you should know:
1. Genus and standard common names, i.e.
matching exam question format.
2. Distinguishing botanical traits.
3. Approximate natural distributions
(lecture and text).
4. Economic importance.
5. Silvical characteristics - tolerance,
habitats, reproductive traits, etc.
