Fundamental Organic Chemistry I

This course covers basic topics of structure and function, organic reaction fundamentals, and stereoisomerism. Aliphatic and cyclic compounds, including alkanes, alkenes, alkyl halides, alcohol, ethers, and alkynes, are studied. Emphasis is placed upon investigating the common types of reactions these compounds undergo.

This course is a continuation of CHEM 2040. Selected topics include aromatic compounds, ketones and aldehydes, carboxylic acids, amines, and amides. The structure, function, and reactivity of these compounds are investigated. IR, MS, and NMR spectroscopies are utilized as an aid in determining the structure of simple organic compounds.
