Research Interests:

Dr. Flanders’ primary research focus is on improving teaching and learning in agricultural education with the ultimate goals of improving agriculture education at the secondary level and meeting the needs for certified agriculture teachers. Topics of interest include: the taxonomy of learning, problems faced by student teachers, historical research in education, distance education, and local food systems. One of Dr. Flanders’ goals as a teacher educator is to grow the Agricultural Education program at ABAC to help alleviate the on-going shortage of secondary agriculture teachers. Dr. Flanders studies problems faced by teachers to gain a better understanding of the causes for teacher attrition. Keys to improving agricultural education is not only rooted in the present and future, but also the past. Historical research provides opportunities to deepen our understanding of the ideas and issues that have shaped our world. By studying people of the past, and their thoughts and actions, Dr. Flanders hopes to gain a glimpse of problems and solutions relevant to today’s students and the educational community. Dr. Flanders is also interested in researching methods to increase diversity in the agricultural education profession. He is specifically interested in examining factors associated with the rapid decline of African American agriculture education teachers. Through research, Dr. Flanders hopes to determine the factors leading to the decline of diversity within the profession and to evaluate potential solutions to reverse this decline.
