ANSWER:

Before installing Java, be sure that no older versions are on your computer.  If there are, you will need to uninstall the older version before installing the new one.

Microsoft Java or the Sun JRE can be uninstalled by navigating through the Windows menu structure as follows:

Step 1.  Click the Start button on your computer.
Step 2.  Click Control Panel (If you do not see Control Panel listed, click on Settings, then click on Control Panel.)
Step 3.  Add/Remove Programs. 
Step 4.  Look for Java 2 Runtime Environment. 
Step 5.  Click Remove Sun Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition.  Please remove all copies or versions of Java, and restart your computer.
Step 6.  Then, go to http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html (see screenshots below)



and be sure to click on Download J2SE JRE.  
Step 7.  On the next screen, click the button to "Accept" the License Agreement and press Continue.
Step 8. Click to download Windows Installation, Multi-language (j2sdk-1_4_2_08-windows-i586-p-iftw.exe, 356.00 KB)



Step 9.  A pop-up box will appear.  Click "Run."  This will begin the installation of Java onto your computer.
