Chapter 1

Introduction

Purpose of the Study

Research hypothesis 2. This is the first paragraph of text. To see the Table of Contents marks for Level 4, turn on paragraph marks with the icon on the toolbar that looks like the paragraph symbol & You can then copy and past the thing from the left { to the right } into your document. The only thing that needs changing is the "Research hypothesis 2" wording to whatever you want it to say in the Table of Contents.

Note: A1, A2, and A3 can be substituted for existing heading levels. I used these to create my own headings.

In the above words of your own document, you would

1.      Move your cursor on the words Chapter 1, go to the 2nd toolbar and click in the "Normal" box and type A1 and press enter.

2.      Move your cursor on the word Introduction, go to the 2nd toolbar and click in the "Normal" box and type A2 and press enter.

3.      Move your cursor on the words Purpose of the Study, go to the 2nd toolbar and click in the "Normal" box and type A3 and press enter.

You have defined the 3 levels of the Table of Contents. Now go to the remaining 1,2,3 levels in your documents, and go to the "Normal" box and select the A1 from the pull-down box.

When finished, you have marked everything for your table of contents for Levels, 1, 2, and 3.  Now, to generate you Table of Contents. Create a blank page, Insert, Break, Next Page, and type Table of Contents centered.

Table of Contents

Where your cursor is located, you will generate your table of contents as follows:

1.      Insert, Index and Tables, Table of Contents (tab)

2.      Options (button)

3.      Beside A1, put 1

4.      Beside A2, put 2

5.      Beside A3, put 3

6.      You can remove the 1, 2, and 3 beside Heading 1, Heading 2, and Heading 3.

7.      This defines the Table of Contents levels.

8.      Select Table Entry fields if you are going to put the Level 4 entries.

9.      Ok to return to first box. And OK to generate as follows.

10.

For an "Appendices" and "Tables" entry in your Table of contents, copy the following lines to your page of the first Appendix and first Table, respectively.

(In the second set of braces, I put an entry for the Appendix rather than marking it as Level 2 because it isn't underlines as Level 2 headings are.

Table 1

Same idea for Tables as for appendices.

If you put field codes for Table of Contents entries, it appears that your text alignment is a mess. However, it isn't. -- just turn the paragraph marks off to return your text to normalcy.

You may regenerate the Table of Contents as many times as needed for renumbering purposes or adding items.
