How to Determine the Version of Windows on Your PC

  1. Note: To determine which operating system you have (except for Windows Vista), follow these steps:
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.
  4. Click the General tab. The name of the current version of your Windows software is displayed on this tab.

Optional Route:

  1. Start [button]
  2. Windows 98: The version is not shown on the Start button pop-up menu.
  3. Windows 2000: The left side of the Start button pop-up menu will display the version -- see image below.
  4. Windows XP: Single Column: The left side of the Start button pop-up menu will display the version.
  5. Windows XP: Dual Column: Windows XP only -- see image below.
