What's this "Session Already Running" message?

ANSWER:

The "Session Already Running" issue is technical.  Here are some things to try to diagnose and fix your "Session ..." problem.

MAC USERS PLEASE SCROLL DOWN FOR TROUBLESHOOTING INSTRUCTIONS.

First, you cannot have more than one Vista window open at a time. Please close all browser windows and try logging on again. If this doesn't resolve it, try each of the following steps, restart your computer, then try to login again.

Step 1.  Make sure you have run your computer through the Interactive Browser Analyzer at
http://www.gpc.edu/webct/analyzer to make sure that you have all the right components (Java 1.4.2_xx to interact with Vista, pop-up blockers turned off, using Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator as your browser).

Step 2.  Don't try to access Vista from a Bookmark or Favorite link. Access it by always typing
http://vista.uga.edu into the address bar.

Step 3.  If you have Toolbars/Search Bars (Google, Alexa, Yahoo, HotBar, WebSearch, WebFunProducts, etc.) that have been installed on your browser by a third party, this may cause this error also. These can include spyware that can hijack your browser. Here's a link to a basic Spyware/Toolbar detection site to help you recognize browser toolbars: http://www.gpc.edu/webct/analyzer/spyware_detect/.

  • Remove the Search Bar and try logging in again after restarting your PC.  To remove unwanted Search Bars, on your PC, click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > scroll down looking for the title of your searchbar > click Remove

Step 4.  Disable any personal Firewalls (such as Zone Alarm or Norton Antivirus) during your Vista session.

Step 5.  You may have spyware and/or a browser hijacker on your computer that is causing this problem. Spyware and Adware can keep you from accessing websites, from downloading and installing programs (such as Java). They can also do other malicious things such as recording your passwords and keystrokes.

Download and run Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition to remove any suspected spyware. Get it from http://www.lavasoftusa.com or from http://www.download.com/. Save it to a drive on your computer, close all programs, and install the program:

Go to Start > Programs > Aware-SE-Personal-Edition and start the program.  Before you scan your computer:

  1. Click on Check For Updates Now.
  2. Under Select Scan Mode, choose Use custom scanning options.
  3. Click Customize. Ensure that all available items are checked. Click on the folder to Click here to select drives and folders. Choose your hard drive letter. Click Proceed.
  4. Click Next. It will start scanning.
  5. Once it has finished scanning, click Next, right-click on the list and choose Select All Objects > Next to remove ALL spyware.
  6. Restart your computer and try accessing Vista again.

NOTE: You have to run this program manually (usually weekly) to keep your system clean, it will not detect spyware automatically like a virus protector. Repeat this process weekly following the 6 steps above.

Step 6.  Disable any "Accelerators" you might be using in conjunction with your ISP. This would include Earthlink Accelerator, BellSouth Accelerator Technology, etc.

Step 7. If all else fails, download and install Netscape or Mozilla, and use either of these browsers to connect to Vista.

FOR MAC USERS:

In Safari, follow these steps:
Try this first:

Safari > Preferences... > Security and click on the "Show Cookies" button. There, you have the option of removing all cookies ("Remove All" button) or finding, selecting and removing individual cookies or groups of cookies (shift-click for a range of cookies, command-click for non-contiguous selections with the "Remove" button. The latter strategy requires being able to recognize a Vista cookie. Look for "vista.gsu.edu" or other recognizable Vista address in the web site column.

If ineffective:

You can try to "reset Safari".  This is a command under the Safari menu.

NOTE:  If you do this, any saved form information and saved password information will be lost.
