Resources School of Agriculture and Natural Resources ScholarshipsScholarships are awarded based upon availability of funds, as determined by the ABAC Foundation, Inc. It is important to note that all scholarships may not be made available for award during a given academic year. Descriptive information is provided for informational purposes only; please note that additional criteria may apply in determining a student’s eligibility for award. The following scholarships have a principal criterion of enrollment in a major field of study within the ABAC School of Agriculture and Natural Resources. ABAC Ag Alumni Scholarship Supported with proceeds from the annual ABAC AgClassic Golf Tournament and the ABAC Ag Alumni Council, this scholarship is awarded to students with a declared major in the School of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Recipients will demonstrate leadership through participation in recognized activities, particularly FFA, FCCLA, and 4-H. ABAC/Staplcotn Congressional Internship The purpose of this scholarship is to provide ABAC students the opportunity to participate in an internship in the Washington, D.C. office of Senator Saxby Chambliss. The internship will be offered to one student per academic year to work in the area of agricultural policy and to obtain direct knowledge of the congressional system. The selected recipient serves during one semester, at the discretion of the Senator’s office and ABAC. Agrium U.S., Inc., Tifton, Georgia Scholarship This scholarship provides funds to students with demonstrated leadership ability and a declared major within the School of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Involvement in leadership activities - particularly in organizations such as FFA, FCCLA and/or 4-H - are a strong consideration for award. Larry D. Allen Agricultural Leadership Annual Scholarship Established by the ABAC Ag Alumni Council Board of Directors in honor of Dr. Larry D. Allen, former Chair of the then-Division of Agriculture and Forest Resources (now the School of Agriculture and Natural Resources), recipients are upperclassmen pursuing an agriculture-related major and are selected upon recommendation from the faculty of the School of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Larry D. Allen Agricultural Leadership Endowed Scholarship This scholarship is awarded to a rising sophomore (30+ semester hours) with a declared major within the School of Agriculture and Natural Resources. O.V. Barkuloo Memorial Scholarship This scholarship is awarded to entering freshman from either Tift County High School (Georgia) or Tiftarea Academy (Georgia). Recipients will have a history of active participation in 4-H and a record of academic achievement during their high school years. Recipients must also have a declared major in an agriculture-related field of study, family and consumer sciences, or a pre-professional area of study. Dolly W. Bearden Forestry Scholarship Rising sophomores with a minimum of 30 semester hours of completed coursework who are residents of Thomas County, Georgia are eligible for this scholarship. J. Lamar Branch Memorial Scholarship Recipients must have a declared major within the School of Agriculture and Natural Resources, with preference to students majoring in Agricultural Education, Forestry, or Family and Consumer Sciences. Recipients must demonstrate strong academic performance in coursework taken to date, whether high school or collegiate. Brightwell Horticulture Scholarship This scholarship is awarded to a rising sophomore majoring in Ornamental Horticulture Technology who possesses a strong academic record. Recipients must have attended ABAC during their entire previous year of study, and have been actively involved in the Horticulture Club. Interest in and involvement with campus beautification projects as certified by the ABAC Horticulture faculty will be another consideration for award. Daren Brownlow Memorial Scholarship Established in honor of Daren Brownlow, a former ABAC student, this scholarship is available to students with a major in the School of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Recipients may be either entering freshman or upperclassmen. Jesse and Dolly Chambliss Scholarship This scholarship is awarded to an upperclassman (minimum 20+ semester hours) with a declared major in Agricultural and Industrial Equipment Technology and/or Agricultural Engineering. B.H. and Lanell Claxton Annual Scholarship Recipients of this scholarship must be rising sophomores with majors in the School of Agriculture and Natural Resources, first preference being to students majoring in Agricultural Education. Recipients must have a record of consistent academic achievement along with recommendations from the faculty of the School of Agriculture and Natural Resources. B.H. and Lanell Claxton Endowed Scholarship Recipients of this scholarship must be upperclassmen with majors in the School of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Students majoring in Agricultural Education will receive first consideration for award. Recipients must have a record of consistent academic achievement along with recommendations from the faculty of the School of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Nancy Clark Coleman Scholarship Established by the ABAC Ag Alumni Council in honor of ABAC’s first Director of Alumni Relations, this scholarship is awarded primarily to residents of Colquitt County, Georgia who have a declared major in Family and Consumer Sciences, in an area of production agriculture, or in agricultural education. Recipients must demonstrate strong academic achievement. J.E. (Pat) and Annie Lou Connor Forestry Scholarship Available to a forest technology major with a history of strong academic achievement, this scholarship is generally awarded to rising sophomores with 30+ semester hours, but entering freshman may be eligible if there are no qualifying sophomores. J. Baldwin Davis Scholarship Awarded to a rising sophomore majoring in agriculture who demonstrates academic excellence in his/her coursework, the recipient of this scholarship will have attended ABAC for at least one semester and exhibit leadership potential. Dennard Scholarship Preference is given to students majoring in forestry and possessing a strong academic record; students from Wilkinson County, Georgia will receive primary consideration, then students from Wilcox and Ben Hill Counties in Georgia. John Henry Dorminy Scholarship This scholarship is awarded to students with majors in forestry, nursing, accounting, or a pre-professional (medicine, law) program of study. Recipients with academic potential and financial need from Ben Hill County, Georgia will be given first preference, with second preference to students from contiguous Georgia counties, then to Georgia residents at large. Eason Ag Studies Scholarship Intended to provide support for students pursuing majors in agri-business or agricultural economics, this scholarship was established in 1992. Charles Grady Elder and Katharine Elder Memorial Scholarship Students must have completed at least one (1) year in their designated course of study and be in the top one-third of their class to be eligible for this scholarship. Further, recipients must pursue a course of study in the field of agriculture. FFA Officer Scholarship This scholarship recognizes the special relationship between the FFA organization and ABAC, and is awarded to newly-enrolled ABAC students who are/were State FFA officers or to returning ABAC students who are/were State FFA officers. All recipients must demonstrate academic achievement. FFA Welding Contest Scholarship This scholarship is awarded to the overall winner of the District 5 Welding Contest, if attending ABAC. Georgia Forestry Association, Inc. Scholarship The recipient of this scholarship is selected by the Forestry faculty at ABAC, is a rising sophomore in the Forest Technology program, and demonstrates academic achievement, as well as strong involvement in Forestry and other campus activities. Lane Green Wildlife Management Annual Scholarship This scholarship is available for upperclassmen in the Wildlife Technology Program demonstrating academic excellence. Selections are made by ABAC Wildlife Technology faculty. Lane Green Wildlife Management Endowed Scholarship Established to honor Mr. Parker Poe and Mr. Lane Green for their work in conservation and wildlife management, this scholarship is awarded to students who have completed 25+ semester hours and who are enrolled in the Wildlife Technology Program at ABAC. Recipients must have consistently exhibited academic excellence in all coursework and are selected upon recommendation of the ABAC Wildlife Technology faculty during the spring semester of each academic year. Jimmy R. Grubbs Ag Scholarship Awarded to students with a declared AET or Agricultural Education major, this scholarship is supported by the ABAC Ag Alumni Council in honor of Jimmy R. Grubbs and is awarded based in part upon recommendations of the faculty of the ABAC School of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Marshall Guill Scholarship Established by students and friends in honor of Marshall Guill, this scholarship is awarded to Agricultural Engineering Technology (AET) majors who have a strong academic record. Oren and Aileen Grace Harden Memorial Scholarship This scholarship is awarded to students with strong academic records, with preference to students majoring in an agriculture-related field of study. Mary P. Jones Scholarship Recipients are selected each year upon recommendation of the faculty of the ABAC School of Nursing and Health Sciences (one scholarship) and the ABAC School of Agriculture and Natural Resources (one scholarship) from students enrolled in those schools who demonstrate consistent academic performance and who do not receive the HOPE Scholarship. James C. and Joyce Kirk Annual Scholarship Awarded to students upon recommendation by the faculty of the ABAC School of Agriculture and Natural Resources to students enrolled in a related major, this scholarship is available to Georgia residents who demonstrate financial need but who will not receive the HOPE Scholarship. S.L. Lewis Memorial Scholarship This scholarship is awarded to Georgia residents with a major in the field of agriculture and a record of academic excellence. Garland S. McIntyre Forestry Scholarship Awarded upon recommendation of the ABAC faculty in the School of Agriculture and Natural Resources, recipients of this scholarship must be forestry majors, with preference given to students from Ben Hill, Cook, Irwin, Tift, Turner, or Wilcox Counties in Georgia. Recipients must demonstrate consistent academic achievement in all coursework. Middle South Georgia Soil and Water Conservation District Scholarship Awarded annually to the first place district winner of the high school essay contest on soil and water conservation, recipients of this scholarship are selected from eligible students from Ben Hill, Brooks, Colquitt, Crisp, Irwin, Tift, Thomas, Turner, and Worth Counties in Georgia. Robert L. Miles Scholarship This scholarship is available to students with majors in agriculture or an agriculture-related field who have financial need and a strong academic record. Recipients may be either entering freshmen or rising sophomores. Melissa Marian Moon Memorial Scholarship Recipients are selected from recommendations of the faculty of the ABAC School of Agriculture and Natural Resources based upon consistent academic performance. David W. Mullis Memorial Scholarship Recipients of this scholarship must be rising sophomores in the Wildlife Technology program at ABAC, with applications reviewed by a screening committee established by the ABAC Wildlife Technology faculty. Recipients must have completed a minimum of 30 credit hours in the Wildlife Technology program while maintaining consistent academic performance. John P. O’Connor Memorial Scholarship This scholarship is awarded to graduates from high schools in Manatee County, Florida, with preference to students with active involvement in 4-H and FFA. Richard L. (“Dick”) Payne Scholarship Established in honor of Dick Payne, who served as Associate Professor of Wildlife and coordinator of the Wildlife Program at ABAC from 1983 to 2001, this scholarship is awarded to sophomores (30+ semester hours) who are Wildlife Technology majors, are members of the Forestry-Wildlife Club, have attended the Natural Resource Conservation Camp, and have maintained satisfactory academic standing. Tommy C. Perry Scholarship This scholarship is awarded to academically strong students who are U.S. citizens but non-residents of Georgia with majors in agricultural engineering or other agriculture-related fields. Senator and Mrs. Harold Ragan Scholarship Recipients are selected upon recommendation from the faculty of the ABAC School of Agriculture and Natural Resources based upon a strong record of academic achievement. James L. Shepherd Scholarship Awarded to students with majors in agriculture or forestry (preference to students with a major in agricultural engineering), this scholarship is available to either entering freshmen or rising sophomores who have demonstrated consistent academic performance in all coursework. Martin M. Sibbet Agricultural Scholarship Established in memory of Martin M. Sibbet, this scholarship is awarded to students majoring in agriculture upon recommendation by the faculty of the School of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Ethel H. Slatter Memorial Scholarship Recipients will be qualified rising sophomores in ABAC’s Wildlife Technology or Forest Technology programs with a record of academic excellence. Southeastern Turfgrass Conference Scholarship Recipients of this scholarship are selected upon recommendation by the Southeastern Turfgrass Conference Planning Committee and the ABAC Environmental Horticulture Technology Department. Selection is based upon academic achievement and a declared major in Golf Turf Management, Commercial Turf Management, Golf Club Management, or Landscape Design and Grounds Maintenance (with an emphasis on golf course landscaping). Recipients must be sophomores in one of these programs at ABAC. B.L. Southwell Scholarship This scholarship is awarded to students majoring in an agriculture-related field or in Family and Consumer Sciences. Students with agricultural majors in animal science will receive preference, and all recipients must maintain a strong academic standing. Jessie Lee Stephens Scholarship The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize and assist deserving Tift County, Georgia youth who have exhibited qualities of determination, dedication, and leadership during their 4-H careers. Recipients must be Tift County, Georgia 4-H members graduating from either Tift County High School or Tiftarea Academy, and are selected from recommendations of the Tift County, Georgia Extension Office. B. Frank Strickland Memorial Scholarship Recipients are selected from recommendations of the B. Frank Strickland Memorial Scholarship Fund Scholarship Recommendation Committee. Recipients must be residents of a county involved in tobacco production located within the State of Georgia, with first preference to students wishing to major in an agriculture-related subject. Strickland Scholarship Rising sophomores who have attended ABAC for at least one semester while maintaining an excellent academic record during their coursework at ABAC are eligible for this scholarship. Involvement in campus activities is also considered. Students with an agriculture-related major may be given preference – particularly if they have a background of achievement in 4-H. Charles Mack Sumner (’56) Endowment for Students Recognizing the special relationship between Mr. Sumner and his alma mater, ABAC, this scholarship is awarded to students graduating from Tift County High School (Tifton, Georgia) who have financial need and a history of academic excellence. Preference will be given to students with majors in education or agriculture. Recommendations in support of candidates are preferred. Julian Jay and Mary Lewis Thomas Memorial Scholarship This scholarship is awarded upon recommendation of the ABAC Family and Consumer Sciences faculty, with first preference in award being to a FACS major, then to a student with a major within the School of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Recipients should have strong academic records and a history of leadership during their high school careers, particularly through involvement in FCCLA or 4-H. James Hollis Tillman Scholarship Students eligible for this scholarship must be incoming or enrolled undergraduates with a major in ABAC’s School of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Preference for this award will be given to students who are majoring in Agricultural Technology (i.e., Animal Science, Livestock Health, or Plant Science), Agricultural Engineering Technology, Forest Technology, or Environmental Horticulture Technology (e.g., Commercial Turf Management). Recipients must demonstrate financial need. L.M. Veazey Memorial Scholarship Scholarship recipients must be enrolled in a program of study within the School of Agriculture and Natural Resources and must be rising sophomores with a record of strong academic performance. Preference is given to students with a major in Family and Consumer Sciences. Vernon Yow Forestry Scholarship This scholarship is awarded to worthy students enrolled in the ABAC forestry program who have demonstrated academic achievement. Preference is given to sophomores when all other factors are equal. |
