TEXT: Elementary Algebra by Tom Carson & Ellyn Gillespie

PREREQUISITES: Scored less than 37 on the COMPASS placement exam

OBJECTIVE: This is a course which emphasizes the fundamentals of elementary algebra. Some of the topics which will be covered are number systems, solving linear equations and linear inequalities in 1 variable, graphing linear equations and linear inequalities in 2 variables, writing equations of lines, problem solving involving applications of linear equations, performing operations with exponents and scientific notation, adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing polynomials, and critical thinking and problem solving involving linear models. This is 4 credit hour class.

Course Outcomes:

Students should demonstrate the ability to ……

  1. Exhibit proficiency with operations on signed numbers and correctly evaluate algebraic expressions.
  2. Solve linear equations, literal equations, and linear inequalities in one variable.
  3. Graph solutions to linear equations in two variables and write equations of lines.
  4. Operate on polynomials.
  5. Write clear, logical, and concise solutions to problems that can be solved by the use of mathematics.

Cell phones, pagers, all other electronic communication devices must be turned OFF during each class.

NOTES: You will need a notebook (loose-leaf is best), a straightedge, and the Ti-83, 83 plus or 84 calculator. A notebook of completed assignments should be kept for daily study and test review.

ATTENDANCE: See the attached policy. 2 tardies = 1 absence

You may have 5 unexcused absences in this class. Any unexcused absences beyond this will result in a grade of F.

STUDENT EVALUATIONS: Your grade will be determined by your performance on announced hourly examinations, projects, homework, and quizzes. There will be five hourly exams, each worth 100 points, that will be given during the semester as listed on the daily calendar. The hourly exams will count 60% of the final grade. Homework, labs, quizzes, etc will count 20% of the final grade. The FINAL EXAM will be comprehensive and will count 20% of the final grade. The FINAL EXAM will be substituted for the lowest hourly exam grade provided the FINAL EXAM grade is higher. Your course grade will be calculated as follows:

90% - 100% A

80% - 89% B

70% - 79% C

60% --69% D

0% - 59% F

THERE WILL BE NO MAKE-UP EXAMS, QUIZZES, PROJECTS, OR HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS. If an hourly exam is missed, the final exam will be substituted for the missed exam. Exceptions may be granted on an individual basis only if extreme circumstances render it necessary. These circumstances must be cleared with the instructor prior to testing.

Students enrolled in classes in the Division of Science and Mathematics will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of subject matter requiring higher –order processing skills. Examination questions may include essay, synthesis, analysis, and applications, as well as completion, multiple-choice, true-false, and matching. Computational skills and drawing or diagramming may also be required.

No hats or other head-gear is allowed on exam day.

CAMPUS RESOURCES: There is free tutorial help available at the ACADEMIC ASSISTANCE CENTER. There are also video tapes and solution manuals. PLEASE ASK THE INSTRUCTOR FOR HELP BEFORE GETTING TOO FAR BEHIND.

Cheating or dishonesty will not be tolerated. ABAC’s policy is in the college catalog on pages 79-80.
