GRADE DETERMINATION:

5 chapter tests:  65%                          MyMathLab:  15%                                final exam: 20%

FINAL AVERAGE / GRADE:

90-100:  A             80-89:  B                                70-79:  C                                65-69:  IP               60-64:  F or IP (instructor discretion)    Below 60:  F          

Students must complete the course with an average of 70 or better AND pass the COMPASS exit exam with a score of 45 or better to exit Math 0099.    

TESTS / FINAL EXAM:  Students enrolled in classes in the School of Science and Mathematics will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of subject matter regarding higher order processing skills.  Examination questions may include essay, synthesis, analysis, and application; as well as completion, multiple choice, true/false, and matching.  Computational skills and drawing or diagramming may also be required.  The final exam grade will replace the lowest test grade provided the exam grade is higher than the lowest test grade.

Students whose number of unexcused absences is five or more will receive a grade of ‘F’ for the course.

ABSENCES / MAKEUP WORK:  To obtain maximum success, students should attend all classes, be on time, and attend all scheduled course activities.  It is the responsibility of each student to contact the instructor prior to an absence or before the next class meeting to make arrangements to make up any work that will be missed, in a manner acceptable to the instructor.  An excused absence will be required for all makeup work.  Missed assignments, tests, quizzes, homework, etc. due to an unexcused absence will receive a grade of zero.

CELL PHONES:  Please do not use or operate cell phones in class (texting, placing/receiving calls, etc.) unless for an emergency.  Ringers must be in vibrate or silent mode during class.  Cell phones must not be seen, heard, or used in any way during tests, quizzes, or other in-class assignments.

WITHDRAWAL FROM LEARNING SUPPORT CLASSES:

A student who wishes to withdraw from a required learning support course must also withdraw from any college-level courses in which he/she is enrolled.  The last day to withdraw from class is February 29, 2012 4:30pm.

 

Learning Support Changes:   Beginning Summer 2011:

1. Students placed by COMPASS in ENGL 0099, READ 0099, and MATH 0097  have two semesters to complete those courses with a grade of C or higher and a passing COMPASS exit score of 45 or better.  Students who do not pass in two semesters are suspended for one year (three consecutive semesters) with no option of appeal. 

2. Students placed by COMPASS in Learning Support math have three semesters to complete both MATH 0097 and MATH 0099 with a grade of C or higher and a passing COMPASS exit score of 45 or better.  Students who do not exit Learning Support math within three semesters are suspended for one year (three consecutive semesters) with no option of appeal. 

Learning Support Attempts & Appeal Changes

Students whose first term is Summer 2011 and after are allowed two attempts to exit Learning Support Reading, English, and Math 0097.  Students who do not pass these courses in two semesters are suspended for one year (three consecutive semesters) with no option of appeal.   

Students placed in Learning Support math have three semesters to complete MATH 0097 and MATH 0099 with a grade of C or higher and a passing COMPASS exit score of 45 or better.  Students who do not exit Learning Support math within three semesters are suspended for one year (three consecutive semesters) with no option of appeal. 

Students who began classes prior to Summer 2011 will be allowed three attempts to exit Learning Support reading, English and math as stated on their original syllabus.   Students may then appeal for a fourth attempt.   If they do not pass the class and the Compass exit exam score of 45 or better, they will be suspended for one year with no appeal. 

·         Students who do not pass MATH 0097 in three semesters will be suspended for one year no appeal. 

·         Students who pass MATH 0097 may appeal to take MATH 0099.

·         Students in English and Reading 0099 for the third time may appeal.

After Fall 2012:  The Learning Support Appeal process will be no longer available to students.   All students will follow the Summer 2011 policy no matter when they began their first LS course.
