Grievance Procedure

ABAC upholds the rights of a student to secure appropriately documented academic accommodations in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Further, the Student Development Center maintains a philosophy of student self-advocacy and the right to pursue a grievance. Should a student registered with the Student Development Center feel he or she has not been treated in a fair or professional manner with regard to accommodations; the student is encouraged to follow these procedures:

Student Responsibilities:

1.   The student should discuss his/her grievance issue(s) with the appropriate instructor of the course or appropriate department representative (i.e. housing, physical plant, library, etc.) directly, unless extenuating circumstances prohibit doing so. Please provide the Student Development Center with the information that you are experiencing a difficulty.

2.   If discussion with the course instructor or department representative does not settle the issue(s), the student should then discuss the grievance issue(s) with the Student Development Center staff.

3.   The student will work with his/her Student Development Center staff member in deciding and following through with appropriate action(s).

4.   If the Student Development Center staff member is unable to assist in resolving the issue(s), the student will be referred to the appropriate Division Chairperson.

5.   If the Division Chairperson is unable to assist in resolving the issue(s), the student will be referred to the Vice President for Academic Affairs.

6.   If the Vice President for Academic Affairs is unable to assist in resolving the grievance issue(s), the Student Development Center Director will advise the student of an appropriate course of action and the appropriate contact person.

Student Development Center Responsibilities:

1.         Discuss the grievance issue(s) with the student.

2.         Determine appropriate course of action to be taken.

3.         If determined appropriate, the Student Development Center staff will contact the instructor or appropriate department representative to seek a resolution.

4.         If the Student Development Center staff member and student are unable to resolve the issue(s), the student will be referred to the appropriate Division Chair.

5.         If the Division Chair and the student are unable to resolve the issue(s), the student will be referred to the Vice President for Academic Affairs.

6.         If the Vice President for Academic Affairs is unable to assist in resolving the grievance issue(s), the Student Development Center Director will advise the student of an appropriate course of action and the appropriate contact person.
