ABAC Fares Well in ITA Tennis Tourney

TIFTON--Tennis players from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College captured three titles during the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Small College Regional Championships this past weekend in Alexander City, Ala.

ABAC’s Calli Robinson and Chade’ Scott won the women’s doubles title, and ABAC’s Carlos Perez and Oliver Smith won the men’s doubles title. Rasid Winklaar from ABAC won the men’s singles event. All these players will represent ABAC at the ITA Small College Nationals event in Mobile, Ala., Oct. 15-19.

At the Nationals, the best players from NCAA Division II and Division III along with NAIA and two-year colleges will compete for a birth in the D-1 National Indoor tournament in November. Last year, Monika Lalewicz won the JuCo Division and made it to the final of the SuperBowl. Lalewicz was also the recipient of the James O’Hara Sargent Sportsmanship award. This year, Lalewicz, who is the #1 NJCAA player in the nation and defending National Champion, broke a bone in her foot while hitting at practice a few weeks ago. She will not have a chance to defend her JuCo Small College title but her teammates will compete in her stead.

In a tournament two weeks ago, Winklaar defeated the University of Florida’s top ranked player Jeff Dadamo, who was ranked #108 in the latest NCAA poll, at the Southern Collegiate tournament held in Athens and hosted by the University of Georgia. Winklaar made it to the round of 16 before falling to Jamie Hunt from UGA who was ranked #23. There were 178 participants and 32 schools represented in the tournament.
