Evening For ABAC All About The Students

TIFTONWith students enjoying the benefits of over $471,000 in scholarship awards at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College this year, the ABAC Foundation looked for a new way to recognize these students as well as pave the way for students in the future.

That’s why the Evening for ABAC on Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. at the UGA Conference Center is such an important event.

“Those funds were not created in a vacuum,” Assistant Director of Development Betty McCorvey said.  “The funds would not have been there to award without the support of alumni and friends of the College.  This entire event is all about the students.

“In fact, we’re going to have many of our ABAC Foundation Scholars and Presidential Scholars assisting with the event.  Our patrons will get a chance to meet these students up close and personal.”

The Foundation selected 12 Foundation Scholars this year.  That group includes three valedictorians and three salutatorians from area high schools.  The Foundation makes available on an annual basis full tuition scholarships to three of the top five graduates from high schools in Tift County, Colquitt County, Worth County, Cook County, Turner County, Fitzgerald, Irwin County, Berrien County, and Tiftarea Academy.

ABAC President David Bridges also helped to select three Presidential Scholars for Foundation funding.  All three were in the top academic tier of their respective high schools.

For 36 years, the ABAC Foundation sponsored the Dollars for ABAC Scholars Benefit Banquet and Show.  The spotlight was always on the entertainer with such marquee names as Trisha Yearwood, Ray Stevens, Debbie Reynolds, and Barbara Mandrell.

The Evening for ABAC replaces that event with a different type of evening featuring casual dining from four different food stations including Italian, Cajun, Oriental, and Georgian.  Carving stations will feature beef tenderloin and pork loin.

“The meal promises to be memorable, and the desserts will be to die for,” McCorvey said.  “Sodexho is really going all out with an assortment of chocolates, truffles, cakes, and tortes.”

Entertainment will be provided by Karla Heath-Sands and her band, The Reflections.  The music will be easy listening with sounds ranging from jazz to pop.  Heath-Sands is the morning and noon news anchor for WALB-TV.

“Later in the evening, Karla has promised to get into some beach music and Motown favorites,” McCorvey said.  “We will even provide a place for folks to dance.”

Tickets to an Evening for ABAC are $125 each or $1,250 for a table of eight.  For ticket information, interested persons can contact the ABAC Foundation office at (229) 391-4900 or visit the web site at http://www.abac.edu/ca/dfs1.htm.

Platinum sponsors for the event are the Ambling University Development Group, Ameris Bank, Pennington Seed, Inc., and The Stafford Companies.  Gold sponsors are AgGeorgia Farm Credit, ACA, Dr. and Mrs. Joseph J. Day, Jr., Roger C. Dill Consulting, McCall & Associates, Inc., Reinhardt, Whitley, Summerlin & Pittman, P.C., South Georgia Banking Company, Health Systems Management, Georgia Farm Bureau, and Mr. and Mrs. James L.
