BUTLER TO HIGHLIGHT ABAC CHORAL DAY FEBRUARY 2

TIFTON – Composer and choral clinician Mark Butler will work with high school choral students from across the state at the first ever Choral Day at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College on Feb. 2. Registration begins at 9 a.m. in Howard Auditorium.

Butler, an accomplished composer, conductor, and music educator, will lead students in learning and rehearsing one of his own pieces. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Florida A&M University and a Master’s degree in Music Education with concentration in Choral Conducting from Florida State University.

Butler is the former director and founder of The Dougherty High Performing Arts Chorale in Albany. In 13 years he led this group of inner city youth students to win 16 first place major National Choral Competitions throughout the United States.

Butler has been selected to Who’s Who Among American Teachers and was chosen by his peers as Teacher of the Year at Dougherty Comprehensive High School.  In 2002, Butler received a composer’s award at the 12th Annual Southeastern African American College and University Choral Symposium Festival in Nassau, Bahamas.

As a published composer for Hinshaw Music, his compositions have quickly grown to popular fame among the choral music world.  Butler continues to conduct workshops and clinics for various musical events. He presently serves as music educator in the Cobb County School District.

“I am excited about this first time event, and I am honored to work beside Mark Butler,’ Dr. Susan Roe, director of the ABAC choral program, said. “ I can’t wait to see the immense talent of Georgia singers performing together at ABAC.”

Choral Day will begin at 10 a.m. in Howard Auditorium. The day will wrap up with a public performance in Howard Auditorium at 4 p.m. The only cost for the event is $6 for lunch in the Donaldson Dining Hall.
