ABAC On The Square to Join in 100th Birthday Celebration

TIFTON—The Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College location in downtown Moultrie will be the site for a special portion of ABAC’s 100th birthday celebration on Feb. 18 at ABAC on the Square.

ABAC Public Relations Director Mike Chason said ABAC President David Bridges and ABAC on the Square Director Kay Powell will serve 100th birthday cake to visitors at noon on that day.  Bridges will also talk about the Moultrie location and its positive impact on the ABAC enrollment.

Around 400 students take ABAC classes in Moultrie each semester.  The college enjoyed its largest overall enrollment in history during the 2007 fall term with 3,665 students from 154 Georgia counties, 12 other states, and nine countries.

ABAC began celebrating its 100th birthday at Homecoming on March 31, 2007 and will continue the celebration through Dec. 31, 2008.  A special week of Centennial Celebration events will be held Feb. 18-22 including a concert featuring singer Corey Smith on Feb. 19 and a Centennial Celebration concert featuring the ABAC music program on Feb. 20.

Chason said the first students attended ABAC when it was known as the Second District A&M School on Feb. 20, 1908.  Since that time, the college has also been named the South Georgia A&M College, the Georgia State College For Men, and since 1933, ABAC.

ABAC alumni should mark their calendars for April 3-5 when the Centennial Jubilee Homecoming will be held on the ABAC campus in Tifton.  For more information about any aspect of the 100th birthday celebration, interested persons can visit the ABAC web site at www.abac.edu or phone (229) 391-5055.
