ABAC Book Chronicles 100 Years of Memories

TIFTONTo commemorate the 100th birthday of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, a brand new book titled “100 Years of Memories” chronicles many of the people and events which helped shape the College during its first century.

ABAC President David Bridges said the book deserves special consideration from alumni and friends of the college.

“To celebrate the 100th birthday of ABAC, we are making this book available as a gift to everyone who contributes $100 to the ABAC Foundation,” Bridges said.  “To everyone who makes the $100 gift, we’ll provide a copy of the book, a DVD of the history of the College and a DVD of the great Centennial Celebration Concert presented by the ABAC music program during the 100th birthday week.”

Bridges proved his commitment to the project by making four $100 donations, one for each member of his family.  Director of Development Melvin Merrill , Director of Public Relations Mike Chason and Alumni Association President Joy Carter followed suit when the book premiered at the Centennial Celebration Homecoming on April 4.  Chason edited the book, and Public Relations Assistant Ashley Williamson designed the book.

“All of the money collected from this Centennial Gift promotion will go toward an idea we have for the restoration of Tift Hall,” Bridges said.  “We want two sculptures in the lobby, one of Abraham Baldwin and one of Captain H.H. Tift.  Funds remaining after that point will be used for other features in the gallery of the building.”

Tift Hall, Herring Hall, and Lewis Hall were the first buildings on the ABAC campus when it opened as the Second District A&M School on Feb. 20, 1908. All three buildings are now closed for rehabilitation.  Bridges said a special listing of names will be placed in the lobby of the restored Tift Hall, showing all the persons who participated in the project.

Bridges said those people who elect not to support the “$100 for the 100th” project could get copies of the book for $20 each from the ABAC Public Relations Office. For more information contact Williamson or Executive Assistant to the President Pam Leonard at (229) 391-5055.
