ABAC CUTTING BACK ON WATER USAGE

TIFTON—Even though Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College has its own water supply through wells on campus, ABAC is voluntarily cutting back on its water usage during this time of extreme drought in south Georgia.

ABAC President David Bridges said the college will join the community in water conservation measures as long as the drought persists.

“We recognize the severity of this issue, and we plan to do our part in dealing with it,” Bridges said.  “We had already cut back on watering a lot of the campus.  In fact, we watered the front campus for the first time this year just a few days ago.”

Bridges said the college’s new athletic fields on Davis Road had to be watered frequently during the past month so the new grass sprigs would be ready for the intercollegiate soccer season.  That irrigation schedule has now been reduced due to the drought.

“We have summer term beginning June 4, and we will have some students living on campus,” Bridges said.  “However, our peak time for water usage will be in August when we expect to have over 1,300 students living on campus.  I hope and pray that the drought ends long before that.”

Bridges said over 1,000 students are expected to attend ABAC this summer.  Fall term classes begin Aug. 20.
