ABAC Lakeside Construction Begins

Tifton--A “moving of the earth” dynamite explosion on Monday triggered the beginning of construction for a brand new $16.9 million freshman housing complex at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.

Titled ABAC Lakeside, the complex will feature suites with single and double occupancy rooms for 489 ABAC freshmen during the 2007 fall term.  The ABAC Foundation will lease 8.78 acres on the north shore of Lake Baldwin for the project, which will be funded by a bond sale.

Featured speakers at the groundbreaking were Ruth Raines, Chair of the Board of Trustees for the ABAC Foundation; Charles Perry, President of Ambling University Development Group; Dr. Gail Dillard, Interim Vice President for Student and Enrollment Services; and ABAC President David Bridges.

Bridges and Raines pushed detonator buttons to set off a small charge of dynamite to signal the beginning of the project.

The ABAC Lakeside suites will have a bedroom, bathroom, and a kitchenette with microwave, refrigerator, and sink.  Rent is $330 per person per month for doubles and $385 per person per month for singles.  The rent includes all utilities, wireless internet, and cable television access.  All leases will be for 10 months.

Parking spaces for 474 vehicles will also be a part of the project, which is located directly across Lake Baldwin from ABAC Place, an 835-bed complex which opened in 2004 and has been completely filled ever since.

ABAC Lakeside will be the first housing at the college devoted entirely to freshmen.  Residents will combine residential and academic life with workshops on time management, relationships, and other transitional issues.
