BROWN WINS DONALDSON AWARD AT ABAC GRADUATION

TIFTON—Maleria Brown, a journalism major from Sycamore, received the highest honor presented to a graduating student from Abraham Baldwin College at Tuesday’s graduation ceremony. On behalf of the ABAC Alumni Association, ABAC Interim President Tom Call presented Brown with the George P. Donaldson Award for outstanding scholarship and leadership.           Donaldson served as president of ABAC from 1947 - 61. Brown’s award included a plaque and a check for $500 from the ABAC Ag Alumni Council.  The award is based on a combination of academics and extracurricular activities.

A total of 181 students participated in the Gressette Gym ceremony, which featured a speech by Governor Sonny Perdue.

While at ABAC, Brown was a member of several organizations, including serving as editor of The Stallion, ABAC’s campus newspaper and a tutor for the Upward Bound program. She was recognized with a Divisional Discipline Award in Journalism and the Divisional Award of Distinction in Humanities on Honors Day.

She was selected by her peers for Who’s Who at ABAC and Who’s Who Among American Junior College Students. In the community, Brown serves as a sign language interpreter in her church.

Brown plans to attend Valdosta State University in the fall where she hopes to receive her Bachelor’s degree in Mass Media with a focus in broadcasting.  She would like to be a news anchor at a major news network, preferably CNN.

She is the daughter of Andrew and Joann Brown.
