GOIZUETA FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED AT ABAC

 

TIFTON Manuel Cuevas-Sanchez, Emilio Del Olmo and Gabriela Munzo are the recipients of The Goizueta Foundation Scholars Fund Scholarships at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College for the 2006-2007 academic year.

Cuevas-Sanchez, originally from Guanajuato, Mexico, resides in Lenoir City, Tenn. He is a sophomore business administration major. He enrolled in ABAC’s High School Equivalency Program (HEP) in 2004. He received his GED and spent the following seven months studying English so he would be prepared to enter college.

He was the featured speaker at the June 2005 HEP graduation and participated in the local and regional 2005 Eagle Award Speech competitions. In the fall of 2005, he received a College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) scholarship and a Tennessee Migrant Education Organization scholarship. 

Del Olmo, a native of Piedras Negras, Mexico, lives in Omega with his uncle and aunt. He learned to speak English at the age of fifteen. He attended Tift County High School and will enter ABAC this fall, majoring in education.

At Tift County High, he participated in the Honors Program for four consecutive years. He was a member of the National Spanish and National French Honor Societies and played soccer for one year. He has volunteered as an interpreter for family and friends at local hospitals and schools. Del Olmo enjoys reading, dancing, and playing soccer.

Munoz is a sophomore business administration major at ABAC. She is originally from Guanajuato, Mexico and lives in Meigs. She graduated from Pelham High School.

She was an active member of her community Boys and Girls Club, tutored her younger siblings, volunteered for the Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund, danced at La Fiesta Del Pueblo and volunteered to assist the Mexican Consulate. At ABAC, she is now president of the Cultura Latina Club. She is the first female recipient of a Goizueta Scholarship at ABAC.

The Goizueta Foundation was established to provide financial assistance to educational and charitable institutions by Roberto C. Goizueta. The Goizueta Foundation is a private, general purpose, grant-making foundation whose mission is to assist organizations that empower individuals and families through educational opportunities to improve the quality of their lives.

To be eligible to receive The Goizueta Foundation Scholars Fund Scholarship, a student must be Hispanic/Latino, accepted to ABAC with a grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher, able to demonstrate financial need, and reside in the United States.
