PEREZ RECEIVES JACK KENT COOKE SCHOLARSHIP

TIFTON - Pedro Perez, an Abraham Baldwin College engineering major from Moultrie, has been awarded the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to students in community colleges across the country, as well as international students studying in the United States.

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation offers support for tuition, room and board, books and other required fees for the remainder of the scholar’s bachelor’s degree. The amount and duration of the scholarships vary by student. Awards can total up to $30,000 per year.

This year’s recipients come from 17 states and eight countries. Perez and the other 37 recipients were selected from 676 nominees from 438 community and two-year institutions.

“We are proud of Pedro for earning this prestigious scholarship,” said ABAC Interim President Tom Call.  “We believe it to be the largest scholarship ever awarded to an ABAC student.  He is a very deserving young man who exemplifies the intellect and work ethic that the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation is looking to recognize.”

Perez is the seventh of eight children. He moved to the U.S. in the fourth grade. Within two years, his English had improved to the point that he was enrolled in the gifted program and encouraged to take advanced math classes. By seventh grade he was earning top grades in math.

At ABAC, he not only continues excelling in math, but college life has sparked an interest in the humanities. He is active on campus, serving with the ABAC Ambassadors, Honors Club, and Cultural Latino. Perez also tutors students through the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP).

Perez plans to continue his education at the Georgia Institute of Technology in the fall.
