ABAC PART OF INITIATIVE TO CURB NURSING SHORTAGE

TIFTON—The University System of Georgia is implementing a $5 million Nursing Program Initiative to help with the production of nurses within the colleges and universities of Georgia. Abraham Baldwin College, along with 20 other USG institutions will participate in a comprehensive effort to produce new graduates with associate’s, bachelor’s, and doctoral degrees in nursing.

The role of ABAC is to expand the Associate of Science in Nursing program, along with nine other USG institutions. Bainbridge College, Darton College, East Georgia College, North Georgia College & State University, Macon State College, Georgia Perimeter College, Georgia Highlands College and South Georgia College will join ABAC in this endeavor.

The college has also received $151,840 for the 2007 year by the Board of Regents’ Intellectual Capital Partnership Program (ICAPP). This two-year grant assists in the funding of salaries for faculty members in ABAC’s highly successful Fast Track Nursing Program, which is part of a statewide University System ICAPP Health Professionals Initiative.

The Medical College of Georgia will offer its existing Doctor of Nursing Practice program as an external degree program on the campuses of eight other institutions in Georgia and Georgia State University will partner with five other institutions to establish a statewide doctoral program in nursing.

An Endowed Chair of Nursing will be established at Georgia Southern University and simulation labs are expected to be built on the campuses of Albany State University and Valdosta State University.

The Nursing Program Initiative will build on the USG’s highly successful Healthcare Professionals Initiative. The USG currently graduates over 2,000 nurses per year. Once this initiative is in place, the number is expected to increase by more than 400 during the 2006-2007 academic year.
